We ran the Hybrid Latex Mattress by Latex for Less through a series of rigorous performance tests to see how it stacked up to the competition in key categories including firmness, comfort, pressure relief, edge support, motion transfer, and cooling ability.
We take our mattress testing process seriously and won’t give a product passing grades if it doesn’t meet our insanely-high self-imposed standards.
How did it do?
First things first: my overall big picture opinion. How did I feel after trying it out?
Long story short: I was extremely impressed by the Latex for Less Hybrid Latex Mattress.
The premium organic Dunlop latex material that Latex for Less used in constructing this mattress provided the perfect amount of support and pressure relief. I woke up feeling refreshed and pain-free.
In my opinion, that’s definitely a HUGE point in favor of choosing the Hybrid Latex Mattress over the competition.
The Latex for Less Hybrid Latex mattress is also a great option for both families with small kids as well as those who suffer from seasonal allergies due to to hypoallergenic natural materials the mattress is made out of.
But as with anything in life, there are some downsides.
They aren’t a huge deal and I feel a bit nitpicky even bringing them up, but I wouldn’t be writing a proper mattress review if I didn’t give you the complete picture.
The edge support wasn’t the greatest, which can be a big problem for heavyweight sleepers, especially if you tend to sleep near the edge of the bed.
The mattress also had a slight earthy smell, which wasn’t the most pleasant to deal with, although it did dissipate quickly (within a day or so).
All in all, I think this is a solid mattress and the many positives definitely outweigh the few negatives.
Firmness test
The Latex for Less Hybrid latex mattress comes in two firmness levels – a Medium and a Firm.
Sitting on a 5 on the mattress firmness scale, the medium Hybrid Latex mattress is suitable for all sleeper types from back and stomach sleepers to side sleepers and combination sleepers.
The firmer mattress option, which is a 7.5, is best for those who sleep strictly on their backs and stomachs.
When it comes to body types though, those who weigh well over 250 lbs may find the mattress to be a little softer while those who weigh way less than average may find the medium feel Hybrid Latex mattress to be a little firmer.
It’s best to keep in this in mind if you fall on either spectrum. Adding a mattress topper may help alter the mattress firmness but it may only provide a slight difference.
If you’re looking for superior edge support and you’re on the heavier side, you may not be too happy with the Hybrid Latex mattress’ performance.
Even though it provided me, someone who weighs more on the average side, with enough edge support that I felt no danger of rolling off the bed when I laid close to it, heavier-set individuals may find themselves sinking in when they sit on the edge of the bed.
Construction
Simply constructed, the Latex for Less Hybrid Latex mattress only has 3 layers.
All these come encased in a certified organic cotton cover that’s breathable and moisture-wicking. Unfortunately for super hot sleepers though, the Hybrid Latex mattress’ soft cotton cover was not as active cooling as I would have liked.
The mattress cover is also non-removable and not washable.
Right underneath the top cover lies a non-fiberglass fire barrier that’s made from organic wool. Using a natural wool fire barrier is much safer than using fiberglass (which a lot of other mattress brands use).
The comfort layer in the Latex for Less Hybrid Latex mattress is made from GOLS certified organic latex that provides contouring and pressure relief that’s more responsive than a memory foam mattress. Latex for Less uses a slightly dense Dunlop latex as the foam layer in the Hybrid Latex mattress.
Bear in mind though that those who prefer a more contouring and cradling sleep experience may not like the bouncy material on the Hybrid Latex mattress.
If you’re the type of sleeper who likes that sunk-in feel, opt for an all-foam mattress instead.
The pocketed coil core is makes up both the support core and the base of the Latex for Less Hybrid Latex mattress. The premium crafted coils offer targeted zoned support especially in the lumbar region no matter the body weight.
Because the mattress is made from natural, eco-friendly materials, you might get whiffs of a somewhat earthy smell when you first unbox the mattress.
This comes from both the latex foam and the organic wool fire barrier.
Cooling test
When it comes to cooling, I found the Latex for Less Hybrid Latex mattress to be cooling enough to provide a comfortable enough sleeping experience although it’s not quite as cool as an active-cooling mattress like the Layla Hybrid.
As you may already know, latex is naturally cooling and combined with the pocketed coils – which allow air to continuously circulate freely throughout the mattress, by the way – make the Latex Hybrid mattress a good choice for those who tend to sleep hot.
Motion Transfer test
Despite the tiny bit of bounce on the Hybrid Latex mattress, I found the mattress to perform extremely well in the motion isolation department when I tried the mattress out with a partner.
Tiny little caveat though.
As with all mattresses that have a coil unit and only one foam layer, the Hybrid Latex mattress is going to be bouncier if you share the bed with a slightly heavier partner who is a restless sleeper and you may feel some cross-mattress movement.
Durability
If you’re thinking cheaper correlates to poorly made then think again.
Especially with Latex for Less mattresses.
Because Latex for Less produces their own latex foam in-house, they are able to cut out the middle men which means cutting costs, hence the cheaper prices but premium materials.
This translates to premium durable mattresses that can last a very long time.
