It’s quite easy to slap on marketing terms such as natural and all-organic onto a whole host of products – which include mattresses – but how exactly do you separate the wheat from the chaff? Thankfully, these days it’s easy to distinguish between who’s being truthful or not when it comes to organic mattresses. The Birch Natural mattress promises a comfortable sleeping experience that’s also clean and green and we’re here to find out whether it’s worth all that dough.

Our experience with the Birch Natural Mattress

For the most part, I really liked the Birch Natural mattress and I fully recommend it especially if you’re an eco-conscious single sleeper who prefers an all-natural and certified organic mattress.

That’s right.

The Birch Natural mattress is certified by not just one but several regulatory bodies that monitor products that are safe for the environment as well as fair trade practices such as GOLS, Greenguard Gold, eco-INSTITUT and Fair Trade.

And the organizations behind these certifications aren’t some small fly-by-night operations. If they say the Birch Natural is legit, then it’s legit.

Another thing I liked about the Birch Natural mattress is its temperature regulating properties. If you didn’t know yet, pure latex is naturally cooling as well as hypoallergenic, making it a great choice for those who tend to sleep hot as well as those who suffer from seasonal or chronic allergies.

One more thing of note with the Birch Natural mattress is its superb edge support. Like most hybrid mattresses nowadays, the Birch Natural features reinforced edges that allow you to utilize a lot more of the mattress surface.

There’s one little (depends on you how little or how big really) hiccup though – if you’re someone who shares a bed with a partner, you would definitely feel a significant amount of cross mattress movement so it’s best to keep that in mind.

Firmness Test

birch natural firmness guide

On the mattress firmness scale, we rate the Birch Natural mattress a 6.5 which would give it a medium-firm feel. Medium to medium-firm mattresses can suit all sleeper types from back and stomach sleepers to side and combination sleepers.

However, if you are a strict side sleeper who weighs less than average, you might find the Birch Natural mattress to be a little too firm for your liking (and your shoulders). There’s a workaround to that if you really want the Birch Natural – chuck on a soft mattress topper on top and voila, you get a softer feel that would be forgiving for your main pressure points.

Being a hybrid mattress, the Birch Natural is also suitable for heavier-set individuals due to its combination of foam and coils for that extra, heavy-duty support.

Cooling Test

We rate the Birch Natural mattress a 9.5 out of 10 when it comes to cooling.

As I’ve mentioned before, pure latex, which the Birch Natural contains, is naturally temperature regulating. This means you can sleep cool when it’s hot and sleep warm when it’s cold which makes it perfect for both hot and cold sleepers (especially if you live in a place with all four seasons).

The Birch Natural mattress also contains individually pocketed coils which allow for continuous air flow which helps keep the mattress fresh and dry for longer.

Motion Isolation Test

We rate the Birch Natural mattress a 6 out of 10 when it comes to motion isolation.

Here’s where the Birch Natural mattress disappoints me just a tiny bit. When I tried the mattress out with a partner, I experienced quite a bit of motion transfer which could be a huge issue especially if you share a bed with a partner who’s also a restless sleeper.

Edge Support Test

We rate the Birch Natural mattress an 8.5 out of 10 when it comes to edge support.

We liked the edge support…

Reinforced edge coils surround the perimeter of the entire mattress giving the Birch Natural mattress that extra oomph when it comes to edge support.

Not only will you be fully supported if you’re the type of sleeper who likes sleeping on or close to the edge of the bed, but you can also utilize the entire mattress surface for a roomier and more comfortable sleeping experience.

Pressure Relief/Comfort

We rate the Birch Natural mattress a 7 out of 10 when it comes to pressure relief/comfort.

This would have been higher had the Birch Natural mattress be a little softer for lightweight side sleepers but here we are.

This is not to say that the Birch Natural mattress isn’t comfortable or pressure relieving – quite the contrary. As a stomach sleeper and sometimes back sleeper, I felt well-supported with no pressure eating into my main pressure points whatsoever.

Don’t expect to get the same contouring and deep compression that a memory foam mattress can give you though – latex mattresses, especially hybrid ones, offer more of a bounce as well as responsive support that’s still pressure relieving depending on your preferred sleeping position.

Construction

There are five layers to the Birch Natural mattress.

These layers come encased in a certified organic cotton cover that features a slight stretch and is breathable and moisture-wicking.

The Birch Natural has five different layers…

The first layer of the Birch Natural mattress is made up of a plant-based, fiber blend fire retardant that helps you avoid any fire-related accidents without the use of fiberglass.

The second layer is made up of certified organic wool that’s also ethically sourced (read: no sheep were harmed). This layer helps with temperature regulation and also acts as an extra fire barrier.

Next comes the comfort layer which is made up of GOLS certified natural latex that offers pressure point relief as well as responsive support.

Up to 1,000 individually-wrapped coils make up the coil unit of the Birch Natural mattress offering you zoned support as well as even more pressure relief.

A second plant-based fire retardant layer makes up the base of the mattress offering extra safety and support.

We did not experience any off-gassing whatsoever with the Birch Natural mattress.
