The traditional spring mattress has long been a bedroom staple across world but with the advent of technology, spring-free mattresses and spring mattress alternatives have taken their place. Mattresses without springs are technically called all-foam mattresses and these mattresses can be made from either memory foam or latex (or something more high-tech like air pods), which are two of the most popular types of foams today. Our Editor’s Choice is the Emma Original.

Our experience with Emma Original
If you think all memory foam mattresses are heat-retentive cloud pockets, you’re wrong. The Emma Original mattress feature’s Emma’s very own Point Elastic AirGocell technology that helps regulate temperature while also enhancing breathability. This makes the Emma Original mattress a great choice for hot sleepers who prefer all-foam mattresses.
Falling on a 5 on the mattress firmness scale (which makes it a medium), the Emma Original mattress is suitable for all sleeper types including strict back and stomach sleepers. I sleep mostly on my stomach and not once did I feel as though my spinal alignment was out of whack. However, being an all-foam mattress, the Emma Original may not be suitable for individuals who weigh 250 lbs. and up. If you are, you might want to check out our best mattress for a heavy person list.
When it comes to motion isolation, we found the Emma Original mattress to be excellent at eliminating motion transfer when we tried the mattress out with a partner. So if you share a bed with a partner or a pet, you won’t need to worry about getting woken up by the slightest of movements.
As we mentioned in our in-depth Emma mattress review, there are only 3 layers to the Emma Original mattress. The first comfort layer is made up of the aforementioned AirGocell-enhanced memory foam that allows any trapped heat to escape. Not only that, it also helps any moisture evaporate faster keeping the mattress fresh and dry.
Beneath the topmost layer lies Emma’s proprietary Halo memory foam that immediately adapts to your body shape giving you that body-hugging comfort that memory foam is best known for. This makes the Emma Original mattress an excellent choice for those who suffer from chronic pain such as fibromyalgia or back pain.
The base layer is made up of high resiliency foam but not just any high resiliency foam – Emma’s own HRX foam which stands for high resiliency extra. This layer helps with providing proper spinal alignment whatever the sleeping position. It features 3 adaptive-cut zones that offers maximum support from head to toe.
All these layers comes encased in a soft to the touch, breathable cotton cover that is also removable and washable, making it easy to clean should any spills or accidents happen. All of the foam layers used in the Emma Original mattress are CertiPUR-US certified.
The Emma Original mattress comes in 6 different standard mattress sizes and measures 10 inches in thickness. It is compatible with most bed frames and foundations.
Emma offers a 365 night sleep trial for all of their mattresses and the Emma Original mattress comes backed by a 10 year warranty. Emma also offers free and fast delivery for all of their mattresses within the continental United States.

Our experience with Natural Form
Here’s something slightly different than your average all-foam mattress: the Natural Form Refresh mattress features air chambers between its memory foam layers, creating a mattress feel unlike any other.
Combining the benefits of both an air mattress and memory foam, the Natural Form Refresh mattress allows you to choose a firmness level that suits your preferred sleeping position, making it a good choice for all sleeper types – from back to stomach to side sleepers alike.
The Refresh mattress features a foam layer with an air pod system as its support and base layer. The air pods are encased in a polyfoam base layer, keeping them intact and secure. There are as many as 80 air pods on each side, depending on the mattress size you choose. This air pod system is a patented technology that can only be found in Natural Form mattresses.
The air pods are manually controlled by exterior dual-sided dials that allow you to choose a firmness level from soft to firm. Natural Form recommends keeping the controls on the ‘optimum setting’ upon first use as this setting scientifically adjusts to your body weight and sleeping position. More than a few users of the Natural Form bed keeps their controls on this setting as they find that this gives them the firmness level that they need.
Body weight and sleeping position does dictate the firmness level that’s right for you. Back and stomach sleepers need a firmer mattress whereas strict side sleepers need a mattress that’s a bit softer so as not to put too much pressure on their main pressure points. A mattress that’s of a medium to medium firm feel works with all types of sleepers. Individuals who weigh well over 250 lbs. though would need more support and although we always recommend hybrid mattresses for heavier individuals, the Natural Form Refresh mattress could offer them a similar type of support as a hybrid.
The air pods lay within a polyfoam base that keeps the mattress stable, unlike air beds that tend to wobble with weight. The top comfort layer is made up of a hybrid foam blend that’s CertiPUR-US certified and is engineered to be more responsive than memory foam – I never felt I though I was being swallowed up by the bed. This makes it a good option for those who suffer from chronic pain such as fibromyalgia. One thing of note is that Natural Form beds come highly recommended by chiropractors and are actually used in hospitals and clinics around the US.
The mattress cover of the Natural Form Refresh mattress is made from 100% merino wool which helps regulate temperature. This means that it keeps you cool when you sleep hot and keeps you warm when you sleep cold, making it great for all types of climates.
If you’re part of a couple or share a bed with a pet, the Refresh mattress is good at isolating motion although not as great as an all-foam bed such as some that we mention below. But we found that this is only an issue if you are an extremely lightweight sleeper and the slightest movement would wake you. Edge support on this mattress is excellent and that is largely in part because of the polyfoam base surrounding the air pods.
The Natural Form Refresh mattress comes in 10 different sizes, including a Split California King. It measures 11″ in thickness and is compatible with most bed frames and foundations, including an adjustable bed.
You get 100 nights to try out Natural Form mattresses and when you find that it suits you, they come backed by a 10 year warranty. Natural Form mattresses come shipped full-sized and Natural Form offers white glove delivery as an add-on option.

#3. Loom & Leaf

Pros
- White glove delivery
- Fiberglass-free
- Suitable for all sleeper types
- No off-gassing
Cons
- Expensive
- Mattress comes full size
- Not suitable for heavier individuals
Our experience with Loom & Leaf
Saatva is a brand that has become synonymous with luxury. From their complimentary white glove delivery service to the sourcing of their all-organic materials that adhere strictly to fair trade and ethical sources, there’s is nothing we expect less.
A favorite among some of our team members, Saatva’s mattresses have been a longstanding staple amongst some of the world’s best mattress’ lists, including a few of ours.
The Loom & Leaf mattress is Saatva’s ultra premium 5 lb. memory mattress. Not many mattress brands use this dense of a memory foam layer. Needless to say, the Loom & Leaf mattress is quite a hefty mattress and more than a little manpower may be needed to move the mattress, which incidentally, is shipped full sized. Not to worry – this is where the complimentary white glove delivery comes in where they not only deliver your mattress to your home but hand carry it to your room of choice, flights of stairs notwithstanding. Unfortunately, this service is only available within the continental United States (sorry, Hawaii and Alaska).
There are only 3 foam layers to the Loom & Leaf and all these layers come encased in a quilted , certified organic cotton cover that’s breathable and hypoallergenic. It also comes treated with Guardin, a botanical antimicrobial treatment. If that’s not enough, the cover is quilted with 2 layers of comfort foams to give it that plush, pillow top hotel bed feel. The Loom & Leaf mattress also features a non toxic, natural thistle flame barrier – no dangers of lurking fiberglass here.
While three layers might not sound like enough, oftentimes the simpler the design of the mattress the better the performance. The first comfort layer of the Loom & Leaf is made up of a cooling gel-infused memory foam that also provides spinal support as well as pressure relief. As previously mentioned, memory foam is known to trap heat and the gel infused foam helps keep the mattress cool. The gel infusion also helps with the mattress’ responsiveness helping sleepers avoid that stuck in the mud feel.
The support layer is made up of a 5lb high density memory foam that provides extra support as well as relief from all the main pressure points. The combination of the gel infused top layer and the high density memory foam layer creates a deep contouring feel without any of the stuck feeling. I hate the sensation of being swallowed up by the bed and I did not feel that with the Loom & Leaf.
The Loom & Leaf features a base layer of high density poly foam that helps keep the entire mattress stable and keeps all the layers together. This layer is also responsible for giving the mattress great edge support – that along with the Loom and Leaf’s thick, hand stitched seams, which is present in all of Saatva mattresses.
While those who are used to spring mattresses may miss the extra bounce and responsiveness, the Loom & Leaf still does a good job at providing pressure relief that sleepers need.
The Loom & Leaf mattress comes in two firmness levels that you can choose from: Relaxed Firm and Firm. The Relaxed Firm feels closer to a medium firm whereas the Firm feel is exactly that. This makes it a solid choice for stomach sleepers, back sleepers and combination sleepers. Strict slide sleepers, especially those who weigh significantly lighter than average may find that the Loom & Leaf may feel like a firmer mattress than usual and might even leave them with sore shoulders in the morning. Those who are heavier than 250 lbs however, may find them to be a bit on the soft side and honestly, the best mattress for heavier individuals are hybrids or innerspring mattresses. Foam mattresses just won’t give them the support that they would need.
Memory foam mattresses are inherently better at isolating motion than even a good quality spring mattress and the Loom & Leaf is no exception. I have a 17 lb cat who likes to jump in and out of the bed during ungodly hours and I barely felt any movement. This makes it a great option for those who share a bed with a partner, or a pet.
One more thing we love about Saatva mattresses is that their foams are eco-friendly and ethically sourced. They are also CertiPur-US certified – this ensures that they are free from chemicals that may be harmful to humans and to the environment. This also means less chances of off-gassing, which can be annoying.
As mentioned before, unlike the usual mattress in a box, the Loom & Leaf mattress is shipped full sized and is ready for use as soon as it gets to your home. Saatva offers a free white glove delivery service along with free setup anywhere within the contiguous United States.
The Loom & Leaf mattress comes in 8 different sizes, including a Split Cal King. It measures 12″ tall and is compatible with all types of bases and foundations. If you have an existing bed frame which you are not yet willing to part with, make sure that the mattress you choose fits its dimensions.
Saatva offers a 180 night sleep trial for all of their mattresses as well as a 15 year warranty. Saatva is also one of the few mattress companies that offer a free removal service for your old mattresses.
#4. EOS Trilux
Check Current Price | Best Latex Mattress
Pros
- Organic and all-natural
- Unique latex foam feel
- UL Greenguard Gold certified
- Firmness level can be customized
Cons
- Can be too pricey for some
- May not be suitable for heavier individuals
- Edge support could be a little better
Our experience with EOS Trilux
Naturepedic is a brand that has been around the block for years now and they specialize in mattresses that are not only good for humans but beneficial to the environment as well. In fact, Naturepedic was created because its founder, Barry A. Cik, a chemical engineer, was searching for a suitable baby crib mattress. Not happy with what he found on the market, he went on to create the first and only organic baby crib mattress designed with a patented food-grade waterproof surface made from non-GMO sugarcane with various breathable options. Not long after, Naturepedic also started producing luxury organic mattresses for adults.
Centering their products around a more holistic approach, Naturepedic has eliminated the use of materials like flame retardants and polyurethane foam from their entire line of certified organic mattresses.
Latex mattresses have long been favored by those of the more ecologically conscious persuasion – not only because they don’t require any mixing of more chemical-based foams but because they provide a mattress feel that is unique only to latex foam. While spring mattresses offer unmistakeable bounce and support, latex mattresses tend to give off a responsiveness that could be a gentler alternative to the more aggressive bob of spring mattresses.
The EOS Trilux organic mattress is Naturepedic’s only all foam mattress offering in its EOS line. Handcrafted entirely in the USA, the EOS Trilux is GOTS certified as well as UL Greenguard Gold certified, which is one of the strictest environmental certifications in the world.
Featuring a Eurotop design that wouldn’t look out of place in any 5 star hotels around the world, the EOS Trilux has removable layers that can be customized to suit your needs and preferences giving you free rein to choose how many layers you want in your mattress. The EOS Trilux mattress has firmness levels that range from Plush to Extra Firm, as well as everything else in between. This makes it a great choice for all types of sleepers, including the strictest of side sleepers.
The EOS Trilux also has a special option for the Queen, King and California King sizes. Naturepedic gives you the option to choose different firmness levels on the right and left sides of the bed, giving perfectly customized firmness levels to each side which is, in my honest opinion, a wonderful option for those who share a bed with a partner who has a different sleeping position than you do.
Body weight may come into play however and although a latex foam mattress may offer more buoyancy and responsiveness than a memory foam mattress, we would still suggest hybrid or spring mattresses for those who are heavier than 250 lbs.
There are 6 layers to the EOS Trilux and each layer is designed to provide the support and comfort that a sleeper would need throughout the night. The quilted top is made up of a blend of organic cotton fabric, organic wool batting and a PLA comfort layer. PLA is a high performance synthetic fiber made from non-GMO sugarcane; it is resilient and has the ability to wick away any moisture thus keeping the mattress fresh and cool for longer periods of time.
The mattress then has 3 separate layers of GOTS-approved, organic latex making up all of its comfort, transition and support layers. Each natural latex foam layer is perforated with laser cut holes to ensure better air circulation throughout the entire mattress. Naturepedic only uses ethically sourced Dunlop latex as the Dunlop process is widely recognized to be the most energy efficient process in producing latex. Talalay latex, on the other hand, requires more energy.
These natural latex layers work together to provide pressure relief by creating a buoyancy that cannot usually be found in most coil free mattresses. Those who sleep hot would also do well by choosing a latex mattress like the EOS Trilux as latex mattresses don’t trap body heat like regular foam mattresses. Although nothing beats a spring mattress when it comes to ultra aeration and breathability, latex mattresses tend to be more temperature neutral.
What we like most about the EOS Trilux is that no matter whether you prefer softer mattresses or firm mattresses, you are given the ability to customize your bed to your liking. Back sleepers and stomach sleepers such as myself need a firm to medium firm mattress to get the support we need but sometimes we also like a more plush feel. I feel as though I got the best of both worlds when I tried out this mattress.
That said, because of its inherent springiness, the EOS Trilux offered less than ideal edge support and did not do a very good job in deadening motion so this might not be the right mattress for you if you are a light sleeper and share a bed.
The EOS Trilux comes in 6 different sizes and measures 12″ thick. Naturepedic offers 90 night sleep trial for all their mattresses as well as a 20 year warranty.

Our experience with Plushbeds
Want a vegan and organic latex mattress that won’t necessarily break the bank? Then you might want to look into the Plushbeds Natural Bliss 100% organic natural latex mattress. Certified by almost all the the major textile and environmental councils and institutes around the world such as UL Greenguard Gold and OEKO-TEX Standard, the Natural Bliss mattress is a vegan latex mattress that can be fully customized to suit your preferences.
Made without the use of chemicals or any animal by products such as wool, the Natural Bliss mattress uses an eco-friendly, trademarked fire barrier that is completely fiberglass free.
There are only four layers to the Natural Bliss mattress and this includes its soft, 100% certified organic cotton cover that is designed to wick away any moisture whilst keeping you cool. Right underneath that is a proprietary eco fire barrier that is made from silica and hydrolysed plant fibers. We’re big fans of mattresses that utilize more natural methods and materials for their fire retardants.
Next comes two separate layers of GOLS certified latex. The first comfort layer is made up of 100% natural Talalay latex. For a mattress without springs, the Plushbeds Natural Bliss feels buoyant and springy and this is due to the use of Talalay, which is softer and less dense than Dunlop latex. This also means that it contours to the body a little bit more, offering more of a cuddled feel not unlike memory foam, only more responsive. Plushbeds have ensured that the Natural Bliss’ comfort layer is calibrated to provide comfort and pressure relief right where you need it the most. I liked the fact that this mattress felt like the best parts of memory foam and latex combined – I felt nicely swathed without feeling even remotely suffocated.
The base layer and support core is made up of organic Arpico latex which is slightly denser and provides a stable, durable base for the mattress. This support core also helps with proper spinal alignment as well as providing extra pressure relief. Some verified reviews have even gone so far as to describe the sensation of lying on the Natural Bliss as though as they were weightless.
As for its firmness level, you have the option to choose between a medium and a medium firm. But, and this is a big but – Plushbeds also gives you the option to work with them to choose a firmness level that’s right for you; but you would need to give them a call. Upon testing, we found that the medium feels more like a 4-5 on the firmness scale while the medium firm felt like a 7-8.
Once again, we do have to stress the importance of realizing that firmness levels are subjective to factors like body weight. Those who weigh over 250 lbs may find that a medium firm mattress would feel like a significantly softer mattress while those who are lighter may find them to be too hard. That said, this mattress is well suited to all types of sleepers – from strict side sleepers to strict stomach sleepers and back sleepers. This also means that this would be a solid choice for those who share a bed with a partner.
Because of latex’s springier construction, we found that the Natural Bliss didn’t do a stellar job in isolating movement. Its edge support, we have to say, also wasn’t the best. So do bear this in my mind when weighing out your options.
Plushbeds also gives you the option to choose how thick and tall you would like your mattress to be. You can choose between 6″, 8″ and 10″. We think this is a nice little feature that encompasses all types of preferences as some people do prefer thinner mattresses while most mattresses on the market are quite thick.
One more thing of note is that unlike most memory foam mattresses, Plushbeds do not use any type of glue whatsoever to hold their layers down; the layers in the Natural Bliss are loose and the cover is removable. This gives you the option to play around with the layers to try and build a mattress that’s just right for you.
The Plushbeds Natural Bliss comes in 9 different sizes, including a Split King. It currently has a rating of 5 out of 5 stars based on 275 verified reviews.
Plushbeds offer a 100 night sleep trial for all of their mattresses, risk free. The Natural Bliss is backed by a 25 year warranty and is shipped free within the continental United States.

Our experience with Ghostbed
Strict stomach and back sleepers, you don’t think we’ve forgotten you, have you? The GhostBed Classic is a spring free mattress that is made up of blend of memory foam and latex foam. GhostBed is a mattress brand that was borne out of necessity because its CEO, Marc Werner, had a difficult time finding the perfect mattress for his chronic pain.
The GhostBed Classic combines the coolness and contouring comfort of gel memory foam with the responsiveness and bounce of aerated latex. While this combination is not exactly new, GhostBed’s proprietary memory foam gives the GhostBed Classic its own distinctive feel.
Like most of the coil free mattresses on this list, the GhostBed Classic is simply constructed with just four layers. The soft mattress cover is made with a stretchy, durable blend of viscose and polyester that’s light and breathable.
The top comfort layer is made up of hypoallergenic synthetic latex foam that’s aerated to help keep the entire mattress cool throughout the night. This latex layer also adds a nice springiness to the mattress that not only helps relieve pressure but also helps sleepers avoid that stuck in the mud feel. Some verified reviews have confirmed that it also helps ‘other bedroom activities’ feel more enjoyable.
Right below that lies the gel memory foam layer that GhostBed is most known for. Featuring larger cells than regular memory foam, GhostBed’s proprietary memory foam does not trap heat like traditional memory foam mattresses tend to do. This makes it a great option for hot sleepers and those who live in warmer climates. This gel memory foam comfort layer also helps give pressure relief and a gentler contouring feel.
Falling on a medium firm on the firmness level scale, the GhostBed Classic is most suited towards back and stomach sleepers as well as those who shift sleeping positions throughout the night. Although some side sleepers may still find this bed comfortable, those who are on the lighter side may find that this mattress would be a bit too firm for them. Strict side sleepers often need softer mattresses to get the comfort and relief that they need. I am a stomach sleeper and although I (wrongly) prefer a soft mattress, the GhostBed Classic definitely helped me keep my hips and back in check. I am also a big fan of their Ghost Pillows, which are also made out of their proprietary memory foam.
While a lot of people may have grown up sleeping on spring mattresses, I find that sleeping on a bed that features a blend of memory foam and latex gives a similar bouncy and springy feel. With that said though, because of its bouncier latex layer, one could feel a bit more motion transfer when sleeping with a partner. Not so bad that you get disturbed but maybe enough for the lightest of sleepers. Edge support is excellent though, and that’s probably because of its thick, high density foam core foundation. This base layer also gives the mattress its firmer feel while providing proper spine alignment.
There is a slight new mattress smell to the GhostBed Classic but this is easily remedied by airing out your mattress for a day or two. All the mattress materials used in GhostBed mattresses are CertiPur-US certified and are made without any harmful toxins or chemicals.
The GhostBed Classic comes in 6 different sizes, including a California King and it measures 11″ tall. It is compatible with all frames, foundations and bed bases including an adjustable bed base, which incidentally is also one of GhostBed’s many specialties.
GhostBed backs their mattresses with a 20 year warranty and you can test out the bed in the comfort of your own home for 101 nights, risk free. The GhostBed Classic currently has a 4.8 out of 5 stars based on 10870 verified reviews.

Not all mattresses have springs. There are many different mattress types such as hybrid mattresses which have a mixture of individually wrapped coils and foams and all foam mattresses that have no springs whatsoever.
We cannot say that mattresses with springs are better than mattresses without springs as is subject to one’s own taste and preferences as well as various factors such as sleeping position, health issues and body weight.
