You may know by now that higher thread count sheets don’t necessarily count (yeah, I went there) unless they’re made from premium, high quality long staple cotton. Don’t even get us started on the weave. So, forget the polyester, forget the silk, if you’re looking for the best bed sheets with high thread counts, you’ve come to the right place.

Our experience with Avocado Suvin Organic Cotton sheets

Avocado Green is a mattress brand that prides themselves on making high quality yet sustainably sourced mattresses but did you know that they also make some of the highest thread count sheets? The Avocado Suvin Cotton Organic sheets come in both 600 and 1000 thread counts.

Made from superfine Indian Suvin cotton – one of the world’s rarest extra long staple cotton and considered the “king’ of all cottons (yep. the Egyptians have been dethroned).

Fun fact: only a few thousand bales of Indian Suvin cotton are grown each year in Tamil Nadu (which I guess accounts for the high price point).

Because its made from extra long staple cotton, the Avocado Suvin Organic cotton sheets feel softer and have a luster that is almost satiny. What’s more is that with every wash, it only gets softer and softer giving it more of that silky luxurious feel.

But you might be thinking multiple washes may wear down your sheet sets really fast and usually it does when it comes to regular cotton.

But when I put the Avocado Suvin cotton sheets to the test (and washed it around 8 times), I found them to be as thick as when I first got them – just super softer. Thick as the Suvin cotton sheets may be, I still found them to be very cooling which is a great choice for those who live in warmer climates.

The Avocado Suvin Organic Cotton sheets are GOTS certified organic as well as Made Safe certified and Vegan certified. So if you’re a vegan and are looking for high quality sheets, these may be just the ones for you.

You get to choose between 600 and 1000 thread count (the higher the thread count, the more expensive of course) but we do have one gripe though – you only get three color options – white, gray and natural.

Pros

  • Temperature regulating
  • Made from Egyptian cotton
  • OEKO-TEX certified
  • Soft and breathable
  • Deep pocketed – can fit thicker mattresses

Cons

  • Can be wrinkly after washing
  • Can be a little pricey for some
  • Only comes in 3 sizes

Our experience with Jennifer Adams Egyptian Cotton sheets

With their wide offering of 5-star resort quality luxury sheet sets, it’s only natural that Jennifer Adams also has their crème of the crop – their 600 thread count Egyptian cotton sheet set.

While it seems like higher thread counts trumps lower thread counts, having an extremely high thread count does not really matter if the fabric isn’t 100% cotton – and of course higher quality fabric means high quality materials such as Egyptian and Indian cotton.

The Jennifer Adams Egyptian cotton sheet set features a 600 thread count and while that may seem like a lower thread count than say, 1000, it really does not matter: 400 to 600 thread count is actually your sweet spot.

Made from 100% pure Egyptian cotton that’s handcrafted in a family-owned mill in southern India, the Jennifer Adams cotton sheets are one of the best sheets we’ve ever tested.

Smooth and buttery soft, I also found it to help me sleep cool when it’s hot and warm when it’s cold. Temperature regulating sheets are excellent for those who live in colder climates.

Just like with most cotton sheets, I found the Jennifer Adams sheets to feel softer after a few washes but I also found it to hold up quite well which means it’s quite durable.

That said, I also found that the Jennifer Adams Egyptian Cotton sheets are not quite wrinkle-resistant – you need to iron them after washing and drying if you want that crisp look (I don’t but that’s just my personal preference).

The sheet set comes in a linen drawstring bag which I think is a nice, sustainable touch – the less plastic, the better.

You get get to choose between 3 neutral colors: mushroom gray, fawn and storm. Because they’re deep pocketed, the Jennifer Adams Egyptian Cotton sheets can fit even the thickest of mattresses.

#3. Brooklinen Luxe Core Sheet Set

High thread count Brooklinen Luxe Core Sheets
Brooklyn Luxe Core Sheet Set

Pros

  • Temperature regulating
  • Cashmere soft
  • Also comes in limited edition colors
  • OEKO-TEX certified
  • Wrinkle-resistant

Cons

  • Can be too pricey for some
  • Can be a little too warm for hotter climates

Our experience with Brooklinen Luxe Core Sheet set

Everyone always talks about cooling sheets but how about something for those who live in cooler climates? The Brooklinen Luxe Core sheet set is made from 100% long staple cotton and features a sateen weave which gives it that unmistakeable lustrous sheen. Sateen bedding has long been used in 5-star hotels in lieu of silk sheets.

The Brooklinen Luxe Core sheet set features a thread count of 480.

Due to its sateen weave, I found it to be silkier in feel than traditional cotton but not as cooling. In fact, because sateen weave fabric uses thicker threads, it has a tendency to hold in heat which is perfect if you live in a place where it’s cold for the greater part of the year.

Although highly durable, sateen fabric sometimes has the tendency to wrinkle so ironing may be needed to get that crisp look. Again, this all depends on personal preferences, you don’t have to iron them (I certainly don’t as I prefer that lived-in Pinterest-y look).

I also found the Brooklinen sheet set to be durable – it certainly held up well after multiple washes. It did not, however, get as soft as I expected it to be but again, this is due to the sateen weave fabric.

You get multiple color and print options with the Brooklinen Luxe Core sheet set which is excellent for those who prefer a lot more color when it comes to bedding. They even offer limited edition colors but you need to be quick as their limited edition line tends to sell out pretty fast.

The Brooklinen sheet set can fit thicker mattresses, even those that are 16″ tall.

If you want a cotton-based material as an alternative to silk sheets, you can’t go wrong with the Brooklinen Luxe Core sheet set.

#4. Chateau Home Collection Egyptian Cotton Sheets

Chateau Home Collection Egyptian Cotton Sheets

Pros

  • Fairly affordable
  • Comes in a wide range of colors
  • Temperature regulating
  • Deep pocketed

Cons

  • May be too warm for hot sleepers
  • No twin XL option

Our experience with Chateau Home Collection Egyptian Cotton sheets

Want high thread count sheets that make you feel as though you’re sleeping on a luxury hotel bed but you’re on a budget? You might like to look into the Chateau Home Collection Egyptian Cotton sheet set.

Featuring a thread count of 800 and high quality fabric, it’s a more affordable alternative to all those higher end name brand bedding.

Thick and heavy with that luxurious hotel bed feel, I found it a bit hard to believe that the Chateau Home Collection sheet set is more than half the price of the priciest pick on our list (looking at you, Avocado).

The sheets are soft and breathable, although its sateen weave means it might be a little too warm for those who tend to sleep extremely hot. This means it’s a great (and cheaper!) choice for those who live in colder climates.

It held up extremely well after multiple washing and drying and I also found the Chateau Home Collection sheets to feel softer after each wash, unlike most sateen weave fabrics.

The sheets also feature a head/foot tag that indicates the width of each end – a thoughtful addition which can significantly cut back on sheet changing time.

The sheets are deep pocketed and can fit mattresses that go up to 18 inches. The elastic bands on the fitted sheets are thick and stay firmly in place.

The Chateau Home Collection sheets are also OEKO-TEX certified and lab tested to ensure safety and quality.

The Chateau Home Collection sheets come in a myriad of color options, including those signature hotel bed stripes.

Another thing I liked about them is that Chateau Home Collection has taken the initiative to reduce their plastic usage and the sheet sets now come in fabric drawstring bags which can be re-used.

#5. Mayfair Linen 100% Cotton Sheets

Mayfair Linen 100% Cotton Sheets

Pros

  • Inexpensive
  • Made from high quality Egyptian Cotton
  • Uses non-GMO dyes
  • Comes in multiple color options

Cons

  • May be a little too thin for some
  • Most popular colors are always sold out

Our experience with Mayfair Linen 100% Cotton sheets

High prices when it comes to high thread count sheets usually means you’re also paying for the brand name but high quality sheets with high thread counts can still be had for a fraction of the(sometimes outragerous) asking price of most brand name bedding manufacturers.

Take the Mayfair Linen 100% cotton sheets for example – 800 thread count 6-piece set for less than a hundred bucks? Yes, please.

Mercerized for a glossy sheen, the Mayfair cotton sheets are made from 100% pure long staple Egyptian cotton.

Non-GMO dyes are used for the colored options and the sheets are OEKO-TEX certified which means they’re safe to use for the whole family.

With each wash, I found the sheets to feel softer and softer which is what everyone wants when it comes to cotton sheets. Because the sheets are mercerized, the sheets are also wrinkle-resistant – no ironing needed.

Mayfair Linen also offers multiple color options for their 100% cotton sheets – you can even get bright purples and deep burgundies, perfect for any color scheme your bedroom might have. Slight caveat: the most popular colors are almost always sold out.

I found the Mayfair Linen cotton sheets to be extremely breathable, which is great for the upcoming summer months.

Thinner threads though may mean that the Mayfair 100% cotton sheets might feel a little too thin for some people so if you want thicker bedding, you might want to take a look at the other options on our list.

How to choose high thread count sheets

A lot of bedding manufacturers tend to over-inflate their thread count numbers so it’s best to be extra scrutinizing when on the hunt for the best high thread count bed sheets.

These are the things you should watch out for:

Fiber

Cotton and only cotton matters when it comes to high thread counts. Any other material will not do – and would not count. High thread count only counts when it comes to 100% extra long staple cotton fibers.

Ply

Ply means the number of threads wrapped together to form a single yarn.

When it comes to thread count, either single ply or two-ply is used. The main difference between them is that single ply often means thinner sheets while two-ply means thicker sheets but may also tend to be less breathable.

Weave

There are so many different types of weaves when it comes to cotton fabric but when it comes to higher thread count sheets, the most often used weaves are sateen and percale.

Percale sheets tend to have less of a sheen compared to sateen (and no, it is not satin although the feel and look can sometimes be a bit similar).

High thread count actually means the number of threads that can fit into one square inch – the more yarns, the smoother the fabric.

Ease of care

The nice thing about cotton is that it is extremely durable and yet extremely easy to care for. Just throw it into the wash and tumble dry on low.

If the sheet set you are looking at requires you to dry clean – it might mean your high thread count sheet set is chemically treated.

Budget

Budgets vary per person and if you want to splurge, who are we to stop you but bear in mind that inexpensive yet high quality options are also available.

  • Super soft
  • Smooth
  • Cooling
  • Temperature regulating

  • Bonus points in the bedroom (if you know what I mean)

FAQs

Is 1500 a good thread count for sheets?

In theory, the higher the thread count, the better the quality but technically speaking, a thread count of 300-600 is already the best you can get. You can find amazing sheet sets with thread counts of 400.

Is 1000 thread count in sheets good?

A 1000 thread count is considered good but a thread count of 300-600 can already give you hotel quality sheets.

Are high thread count sheets better?

High thread count sheets are better because they are softer, smoother and more cooling than regular sheets.

Is 600 or 800 thread count softer?

Both 600 and 800 thread count sheets can be soft, aside from thread count, softness can also depend on the type of weave used in the fabric.

Conclusion

We all want the best when it comes to where we lay our heads and high thread count sheets are deemed to be the ultimate in bedding luxury (see our guide on what thread count means for more details).

But do not be fooled by the marketing jargon. Get what you feel is right for you.
