The Bear Star Hybrid is a plush pillowtop mattress that features a combination of cooling gel-infused foam and individually wrapped steel coils.
As with all of Bear’s other mattresses (like the Bear Elite Hybrid), the Bear Star Hybrid also features Bear’s signature infrared responsive cover that’s made out of Celliant which not only helps you recover while you sleep but is temperature regulating as well helping you sleep warm when it’s cool and sleep cool when it’s hot.
Another thing we like a lot about the Bear Star Hybrid is that it does not contain any fiberglass which some mattress brands use as a fire barrier. Although generally considered safe to use in mattresses, fiberglass can be very dangerous if it escapes.
As always we’ve put the Bear Star Hybrid mattress through a series of performance tests to see what it’s really made of.
Firmness/Comfort Test
The Bear Star Hybrid sits on a 6.5 on the mattress firmness scale which gives it a medium-firm feel. A medium-firm mattress can typically accommodate all sleeper types from strict side sleepers to back and stomach sleepers.
With the Bear Star Hybrid though, because of its medium-firm feel, side sleepers who weigh less than average might find the mattress to be a little too firm even with the plush pillowtop mattress surface.
Since the Bear Star Hybrid is a hybrid mattress (I mean, yeah, as we can see from its name), it can also accommodate sleepers of all shapes and sizes including those who weigh a little more than average but if you’re around 250 lbs. and up, the Bear Elite Hybrid may give you better support since it has a more robust coil system.
Cooling Test
We rate the Bear Star Hybrid a 9 out of 10 for cooling.
Modern hybrid mattresses, in general, are very good at keeping heat at bay especially with the combinations of coil units and gel-infused foam and the Bear Star Hybrid is no different – in fact, it’s even a little bit better.
Why?
Because it also features a mattress cover that’s made from Celliant which, as we’ve mentioned, not only helps with muscle recovery but helps regulate temperature as well.
Don’t get us wrong though – the Bear Star Hybrid’s cover is not cool to the touch as the Bear Elite Hybrid’s mattress cover which, aside from containing Celliant, also contains PCM or phase change material which is the fabric responsible for the cool to the touch feel – but the Bear Star Hybrid does not retain any heat whatsoever thanks in part to the fact that the mattress does not contain any memory foam.
Motion Transfer Test
We rate the Bear Star Hybrid an 6.5 out of 10 for motion isolation.
Now here’s where the lack of memory foam is showing its weakness – we experienced a significant amount of movement when we tried the Bear Star Hybrid out with a partner.
The foam used in the Bear Star Hybrid is pretty bouncy and very responsive which is great if you are on the hunt for a very responsive bed but not so much when you share a bed with a partner and especially if you are a light sleeper and the smallest of movements wake you up no matter what.
Edge Support Test
We rate the Bear Star Hybrid a 9 out of 10 for edge support.
For all its faults when it comes to motion isolation, the Bear Star Hybrid more than makes up for it when it comes to edge support.
The Bear Star Hybrid mattress features edge to edge support coils that are enhanced on every side giving the mattress extremely sturdy edge support.
Edge support is often overlooked when it comes to mattress features but for those who like to sleep on or close to the edge of the bed, edge support is crucial.
Having good edge support like the Bear Star Hybrid does also allows sleepers to utilize more of the mattress surface.
Pressure Relief Test
We rate the Bear Star Hybrid a 9 out of 10 for pressure relief.
Although not as pressure relieving as true memory foam, the Bear Star Hybrid mattress still provided us with enough contouring and compression that we never found ourselves in any discomfort or pain in any of our pressure points.
Construction
There are 3 layers to the Bear Star Hybrid. They all come encased in a moisture-wicking, breathable cover that’s made out of Celliant fiber that’s also temperature regulating.
The first comfort layer is made out of Serene Gel foam that’s Bear’s own proprietary foam. More responsive than memory foam, it is also not as heat-retentive as traditional memory foam which is good for hot sleepers.
The second comfort layer is made up of responsive comfort foam that also acts as a transition layer between the first foam layer and the mattress’ coil unit. The second layer also offers zoned support that targets all areas of the body.
The coil unit is made up of individually encased coils that offers even more responsive support. The coil unit also acts as the entire mattress’ base layer.
Durability
We can safely say that, like the Bear Elite Hybrid which we’ve also tried out for ourselves, the Bear Star Hybrid mattress can and will last you for a very long time – with proper care and maintenance of course.
Made from premium quality materials such as Celliant and proprietary foams, the Bear Star Hybrid is also made in the United States which ensures quality and regulation.
