Our experience with Aizome Bedding

Simple plant-based ingredients that’s chemical free, this is what Aizome Bedding promises. While some of your favorite sheets may claim to be hypoallergenic and plant-based, the dyes used to color the fabric may be chock-full of chemicals. This could pose serious problems for those who are acutely sensitive to even the smallest of allergens.

Natural fabrics such as organic cotton are not exactly pure white in their natural state but are bleached and dyed. Aizome Bedding uses natural indigo dye to achieve the soft blue colour that is unique to Aizome sheets.

Natural indigo dyeing is a craft that has been around for centuries and is done by extracting pigment from the indigo plant (indigo naturalis). A lot of indigo dyes nowadays are not in its pure form – they are mostly mixed with chemical dyes as is the case with most denim fabrics. Hypoallergenic all-natural fabrics dyed with pure, natural indigo dye are deemed safer for sensitive skin no matter how many times they have been washed.

The Aizome Bedding Duvet cover is made with 100% GOTS virgin cotton. Virgin cotton is the term used for cotton that is unbleached and untreated, making the duvet cover (and all of Aizome Bedding’s other products) completely chemical-free. This also makes their texture slightly different, a touch fluffier than regular, treated cotton. You might not feel the difference if comparing between high quality sheets and duvet covers but the Aizome Bedding Duvet cover is some of the softest bedding we have ever tried.

Duvets, as opposed to comforters, are basically quilts that require the use of covers as both a decorative and protective element. Aizome Bedding also offers a duvet cover set that includes 1 duvet cover, 1 bottom sheet and 2 pillowcases.

The duvet cover is dermatologically tested and is endorsed by the National Eczema Association making it a good choice for those who suffer from from skin issues such as eczema, allergies and psoriasis. People whose skin health are a bit on the sensitive side are often recommended to use natural fabrics to soothe their condition.

Featuring a sateen weave which is the smoothest weave there is, both the duvet cover and the Aizome bed sheets, if you happen to be getting them, can rival some of the best bed sheets in the world. Thread count does not really count anymore these days, although high end hotel beds still do utilize something like 3000 count Egyptian cotton sheets. If its softness you’re mainly after, the Aizome Duvet cover definitely delivers. One more thing about cotton sheets – any cotton sheets for that matter – they do get softer with time and washes. When we tried out the duvet cover, we did experience a soft, silky smooth sleeping experience all night long from the get go.

Smoother fabric also helps your skin while you sleep, by creating a smoother surface especially if you are the type who sleeps on your sides or stomach. I am mostly a stomach sleeper and sometimes sleeping on sheets or covers that are masquerading as smooth but are actually rough can create sleep wrinkles. Although temporary, sleep wrinkles can still wreak permanent damage especially if you tend to sleep in the same position every night.

We also found that the Aizome Duvet cover kept us sleeping cool throughout the night because of its breathability. Of course, the purpose of duvets and quilts/comforters are to actually help us stay warm but the fabric itself of the Aizome Duvet cover was both cooling and comfy.

Sizes

The cover comes in standard sizes that can fit every bed although if we are going to be totally technical about it, it only comes in three sizes to fit all:

  • Twin
  • Full/Queen
  • King/California King

Care instructions

Aizome recommends using gentle, plant-based detergents and stain removers when it comes to cleaning the duvet cover. Although the natural color is very strong and won’t run, a bit of color transfer may occur if you use regular bleach and/or detergent. It is always best to wash your bedding separately. You can also have the cover dry cleaned if you so wished.

Aizome states that you can use the cover straight out of the package after purchase with no need for a pre-wash since all their bedding products are bleach-free and chemical-free but personally, I always wash my bedding (sheets, pillow cases, covers and all) before first use. For any spills or stains, spot cleaning must be done immediately.

Colors

The Aizome Duvet cover comes in 4 muted, somewhat neutral colors that fit with the Japanese ethos of absolute minimalism :

  • Dark Natural Indigo
  • Virgin Cotton
  • Sumac Grey
  • Rubia Rose

Aizome is currently working on expanding their color range.

Sleep Trial

Not many companies offer sleep trials for bedding but Aizome does. The Duvet cover comes with a 365 night (yes, 1 year) sleep trial that’s totally risk-free. They also offer free shipping for orders over $100.
