A new movie might be relatable to all of the insomniacs out there. Netflix’s upcoming science fiction thriller Awake explores a world where humanity has lost its ability to sleep. The movie stars Gina Rodriguez as a mother and former soldier who is the only person that can save the world from the devastating effects of sleep deprivation. The Mark Rasso-directed movie is scheduled to be released on Netflix on June 9.
Directed by Mark Rasso and starring Gina Rodriguez, the upcoming movie follows the main character and her two children as they experience an apocalyptic scenario where all electronics stop working and no one can fall asleep. The main character struggles to keep herself and her children alive in a world filled with people going crazy from sleep deprivation, and realizes that she holds the key to humanity’s survival in her daughter, who is the only human being on earth who can still fall asleep.
The official description on Netflix says “after a global event wipes out humanity’s ability to sleep, a troubled ex-soldier fights to save her family as society and her mind spiral into chaos.”
Director Mark Rasso claims that he wanted to accurately show the effects of sleep deprivation in the characters. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, he said, “In the green rooms and the trailers, we put up these lists of what your symptoms are depending on how many days without sleep to remind them.” Since they shot the movie out of sequence, keeping track of what level of sleep deprivation each character was at in each scene was the hardest part of making the movie. It was important to make sure that the actors conveyed what going without sleep would feel like mentally, emotionally, and physically.
The official trailer shows the characters going through different stages of sleep deprivation: disorientation, hallucinations, and hysteria.
Netflix has previously released documentaries about sleep, but this will the first time that the streaming service explores the topic in fiction form.
