Our experience with Plank Firm Mattress
Contrary to what many may believe, there is a market for extremely firm mattresses – just look at Japan.
The Plank Firm mattress borrows from the age-old tradition of tatami mats; thin mats made from rushes or hemp and woven through with straw that were slept on by the ruling nobility and the samurai before the 16th century.
Today, tatamis and floor futons are ubiquitous throughout any modern Japanese home.
But the history lesson stops here. I don’t need to explain to you the benefits of a firm mattress.
You know why you’re here.
And no, the Plank Firm mattress is not the firmest mattress we’ve ever tried. But it comes close.
For someone who suffers from the occasional debilitating back pain due to hours upon hours spent hunched in front of a computer, the Plank Firm mattress offered respite and relief.
But as a combination stomach and side sleeper, sleeping on my side had me waking up to a completely different type of pain. Suffice it to say, if you’re a strict side sleeper, stay away.
I have yet to find an all-foam mattress that did not have great motion isolating properties, and the Plank Firm is no exception.
I definitely recommend it if you share a bed with a partner (just make sure that they’re also either a back or stomach sleeper).
Firmness Test
You get two different firmness levels with the Plank Firm mattress and get this – both come within the same mattress (it’s flippable).
One side is extra firm which is around 10 (yes, 10) on the mattress firmness scale and the other is medium-firm (supposedly) but I think it’s a firm (around a 7-8 on the scale) especially if you weigh less than average.
All you need to do is to flip the mattress to whichever side has the firmness level you prefer.
Since it’s an all-foam mattress, I don’t recommend the Plank Firm mattress for heavier-set sleepers since it isn’t able to provide with the extra support that they need.
Cooling Test
We rate the Plank Firm mattress an 8.5 out of 10 when it comes to cooling.
The Plank Firm does not contain any memory foam, which is the number one suspect when it comes to heat retention.
Suffice it to say, I found the Plank Firm mattress to sleep pretty cool even though it doesn’t contain any actively cooling materials.
You can, however, choose to add a GlacioTex cooling cover but I suggest you only do this if you sleep very, very hot.
Motion Isolation Test
We rate the Plank Firm mattress a 9.5 out of 10 when it comes to motion isolation.
As I’ve mentioned previously, all-foam mattresses tend to perform very well when it comes to absorbing cross mattress movement and the same goes for the Plank Firm.
It’s definitely an excellent choice if you share a bed with a partner or a pet.
Edge Support Test
We rate the Plank Firm mattress a 7.5 out of 10 when it comes to edge support.
Mattresses with exceptional edge support are usually hybrids that contain reinforced edge coils. The Plank Firm is not included in this category, so its edge support isn’t really the best.
Pressure Relief/Comfort Test
We rate the Plank Firm mattress a 7 out of 10 when it comes to comfort and pressure relief.
Of course you won’t feel like you’re sleeping on rocks, but if you want a plush sleeping experience, you should look elsewhere.
Although the Plank Firm does contain a quilted top, it sleeps very firm which makes it a good option for back and stomach sleepers but not for strict side sleepers.
One thing I liked a lot about the Plank Firm is that it helped me attain proper spinal alignment.
Construction
There are 4 layers to the Plank Firm mattress.
In lieu of a cover, you get the quilted top, which makes up the first layer of the mattress. It’s made up of soft, breathable cotton.
The comfort layer of the Plank Firm is made up of a thick slab of high density foam on its extra firm side. This layer helps provide support and helps you achieve proper spinal alignment.
On the medium-firm to firm side, you get a layer of Supreme Response comfort foam which is a proprietary material that’s high density, yet softer and bouncier than the first layer.
Another layer of quilted cotton makes up the cover or base (depending on which side you sleep on).
We did experience a tiny amount of off-gassing when we first unboxed the mattress but this dissipated within 48 hours.
Durability
Mattresses by Brooklyn Bedding – the Aurora Luxe and Signature Hybrid are two others that we’ve reviewed recently – tend to perform VERY well when it comes to durability.
Although the Plank Firm mattress is very well-made, I think it has a tendency to wear down quicker due to its construction and materials.
This is not to say that it won’t last you well over 5 years though.
I just think it won’t last you any more than that without showing any signs of sag or wear with regular use.
Sizes
The Plank Firm mattress comes in 12 sizes, including both standard and non-standard sizes such as RV King (yes, you can get one for your RV if you have one).
It measures 10 inches in thickness and is compatible with most bed frames, bases and foundations.

Similar Mattresses to Consider
If the Plank Firm doesn’t quite tickle your firm mattress fancy, you can check out these alternatives.
Plank Firm Luxe
If you like the sound of the Plank Firm mattress but want it in hybrid form, check out the Plank Firm Luxe.
You still get the same extra-firm feel but you get extra zoned support from the Plank Firm Luxe’s individually wrapped coils.
It also contains 2 separate layers of high density foam instead of one thick slab, which somehow makes it feel a bit plusher.
Nolah Evolution 15
If you want something that provides extra support, check out the Nolah Evolution 15.
The Nolah Evolution 15 comes in 3 different firmness levels, including a firm option that feels pretty similar to the Plank Firm.
But unlike the Plank Firm, the Nolah Evolution 15 contains a coil unit which helps provide extra support that heavier-set people need.
Winkbeds GravityLux
If you prefer a mattress with exceptional edge support, check out the WinkBeds GravityLux mattress.
Like the Plank Firm, it has a firm feel (although you can also get a medium or soft version).

Conclusion
Although not the firmest mattress we’ve tried, the Plank Firm will still tickle your firm mattress funny bone if you’re a back or stomach sleeper looking extra support.
The Plank Firm is also pretty affordable, making it a good option if you’re on a budget but still want a well-made, good-quality mattress.
