You’d be hard-pressed to find a mattress that combines graphite-infused latex foam, cooling gel-infused memory foam, micro-coils and a coil unit but there are some gems out there if you look hard enough and in this case, we looked right across the pond. The Origin Hybrid Pro – or Origin LumbarCloud mattress as it’s known here in the US – is one such mattress and we’re here to find out if it sounds too good to be true. Pros

  • Extremely cooling
  • Offers lumbar support
  • Helps with proper spinal alignment
  • Suitable for strict back and stomach sleepers

Cons

  • Edge support could deteriorate over time
  • May be too firm for strict side sleepers

Our experience with the Origin Hybrid Pro/LumberCloud Mattress

To say that we were pleasantly surprised with the Origin Hybrid Pro mattress is a bit of an understatement.

The materials alone are already pretty impressive. I mean, where else can you find a mattress that contains graphite-infused latex foam and cooling gel-infused memory foam?

For those that sleep extremely hot, this mattress is a godsend.

The cooling properties of the Origin Hybrid Pro/LumbarCloud mattress are even comparable to that of Tempurpedic’s Activebreeze line of ultimate cooling mattresses and for the Origin mattress’ price point, that’s the highest praise possible.

The Origin Hybrid Pro mattress also features layers upon layers of foam and coil combos that work together to provide you with good spinal alignment and better lumbar support.

So those with back problems would definitely appreciate this mattress.

But, as always, no mattress is the perfect be-all and end-all and the Origin Hybrid Pro can be a little too firm for those who tend to sleep predominantly on their sides.

We do not recommend this mattress to strict side sleepers, no matter their size or weight.

Firmness

origin hybrid pro mattress firmness

On the mattress firmness scale, the Origin Hybrid Pro/LumbarCloud mattress sits at a 7.5.

This gives it a medium-firm feel but to be completely honest, the mattress veers more toward the firmer territory.

Usually, we’d say that medium-firm mattresses are suitable for most sleeper types including side sleepers, but with the Origin Hybrid Pro we believe that strict back and stomach sleepers would benefit the most from it.

Since it’s a hybrid mattress (featuring a double coil construction at that), the Origin Hybrid Pro mattress can and will provide the extra support individuals who weigh more than average need.

Cooling

We rate the Origin Hybrid Pro/LumbarCloud mattress a 9.5 when it comes to cooling.

The Origin LumbarCloud lives up to its cooling claims

There’s more than one actively cooling material in the Origin Hybrid Pro mattress and we must say that they are all working to their fullest potential.

The Origin Hybrid Pro/LumbarCloud mattress one of the most cooling mattresses we’ve tried at its price point.

I mean, graphite-infused latex (and we all know that latex by itself is already naturally cooling), the hexagonal grid that allows for more airflow, cooling gel-infused comfort foam, bamboo-infused wool AND the double coil construction – it’s like a quintuple whammy of actively cooling materials.

Motion Isolation

We rate the Origin Hybrid Pro/LumbarCloud mattress an 8 when it comes to motion isolation.

The mattress isolates motion very well. Not the best we’ve tried, but far from the worst.

While we did not really experience crazy amounts of motion transfer when we tried the Origin Hybrid Pro with a partner, we also didn’t think that it’s the best we’ve tried.

Due to its double coil construction, you will experience a small amount of cross mattress movement especially if you share a bed with a partner that’s significantly heavier than you are.

Edge Support

We rate Origin Hybrid Pro/LumbarCloud mattress an 8.5 when it comes to edge support.

Origin Hybrid Pro/LumbarCloud edge support test

During our first few tries, we found the edge support of the Origin Hybrid Pro mattress to be very good – thanks in part to its D-3 edge support but because its made of foam and not coils (like most hybrid mattresses have), we fear that it will deteriorate and sag with long-term use so it’s best to keep that in mind.

Pressure Relief/Comfort

We rate the Origin Hybrid Pro/LumbarCloud mattress an 8.5 when it comes to comfort and pressure relief.

If only the Origin Hybrid Pro mattress were a little softer, we would have rated it in the high nines but alas, when it comes to strict side sleepers, there’s not much pressure relief to be had.

For stomach and back sleepers though, the Origin Hybrid Pro can and will provide good pressure relief as well as extra lumbar support thanks largely in part to its combination of latex and comfort foam as well as its double coil construction.

Construction

There are eight layers to the Origin Hybrid Pro/LumbarCloud mattress.

It does not come encased in a typical mattress cover but the bottom layer of the mattress features a cooling, breathable cotton cover.

The Origin Hybrid Pro/LumbarCloud has eight different layers

The topmost layer of the Origin Hybrid Pro mattress is made up of PolarSilk Tencel pillowtop that’s silky soft and cool to the touch. Tencel fabric is also known to be pretty breathable and moisture-wicking.

Beneath the pillowtop lies the graphite-infused latex layer.

As we’ve mentioned, latex by itself is already pretty cooling but the addition of graphite crystals takes it up a notch.

Graphite is an excellent heat conductor and when used in mattresses it helps draw away body heat. Latex foam is also naturally buoyant, giving you responsive support.

Next comes the HexaGrid layer which is made up of premium memory foam. But it’s not just your typical slab of memory foam – this layer features a laser-cut hexagonal design that helps provide contouring and zoned support.

A layer of organic bamboo-infused wool sits underneath the HexaGrid layer which not only acts as a flame retardant but also helps with temperature regulation.

ErgoCoil steel micro-springs make up the next layer and this layer adjusts to your movements for personalized support.

A layer of cooling comfort foam makes up the sixth layer.

Featuring an open-celled construction and infused with cooling gel, this layer offers extra support and comfort while also helping with heat dissipation.

The coil unit of the Origin Hybrid Pro mattress is made up of Aerospace-grade titanium springs and each one is individually wrapped for better motion isolation.

You get up to 5,700 coils in the Origin Hybrid Pro mattress and this layer provides targeted support across all 7 major lumbar zones of the body for better spinal alignment and superior back support.

The final layer of the Origin Hybrid Pro mattress also acts as its encasement. Made from high-density foam that’s raised on the sides for better edge support, the bottom layer of the Origin Hybrid Pro mattress also helps hold all the op layers together for stability and durability.

We did not experience any instances of off-gassing when we first unboxed the Origin Hybrid Pro mattress and it took just a few minutes to fully expand to its actual size.

Durability

There’s no question about the craftsmanship and materials when it comes to the Origin Hybrid Pro/LumbarCloud mattress.

I mean – premium foam layers and Aerospace-grade steel are not really your cheap, run of the mill materials.

Suffice it to say that we believe that the Origin Hybrid Pro can last you a very long time especially with proper mattress care and maintenance.
