We’ve tried hundreds of latex mattresses by now and to be honest they all feel pretty similar when it comes to firmness and feel – bouncy and responsive – but what sets the Bear Natural mattress apart from all the rest is its plush, hotel bed-like feel, so much so that a lot of high-end boutique hotels across America actually use the Bear Natural mattress in their beds.
Of course, there’s also the fact that it’s naturally cooling and hypoallergenic as all natural latex mattresses are and coupled with the Bear Natural’s high gauge individually wrapped steel coils makes for a mattress that helps you sleep cooler throughout the night.
Although we can safely say that we don’t really have any major complaints against the Bear Natural mattress, we found its edge support to be just average and its firmness to be softer than advertised.
Firmness
Bear rates its Natural mattress a medium-firm on their website but upon trying it out, we found it to be more of a medium to medium-soft depending on your body weight – the heavier you are, the softer it will feel and the lighter you are, the firmer.
Hence why we rate it around a 4.5 to 5 on the mattress firmness scale.
Being a hybrid mattress, the Bear Natural mattress can provide enough support for those who weigh well over 250 lbs thanks to its robust coil system.
Cooling Test
We rate the Bear Natural mattress a 7.5 when it comes to cooling.
True, pure latex foam is already naturally cooling especially compared to manmade foam and the Bear Natural’s Talalay latex foam layer did a very good job of keeping heat at bay even without any actively cooling materials.
That said, because the Bear Natural mattress is a bit more contouring and cradling (yes, kinda like memory foam), those who are a bit more heavier-set may feel just a tiny bit of heat retention. Just a little bit.
Motion Transfer Test
We rate the Bear Natural mattress an 8.5 when it comes to motion isolation.
Most hybrid latex mattresses can be a bit springy which can contribute to motion transfer but we were pleasantly surprised to find that the Bear Natural mattress performed pretty well in deadening any cross mattress movement when we tried the mattress out with a partner.
Bear in mind though that if you share a bed with someone slightly heavier than you are you might feel just a small amount of movement.
Edge Support Test
We rate the Bear Natural mattress a 7 when it comes to edge support.
When it comes to edge support, the Bear Natural mattress is neither great nor super terrible – we’d say it’s pretty average.
If you’re heavier-set though and you prefer sleeping close to or on the very edge of the bed, you may just find yourself on the floor. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.
Pressure Relief/Comfort Test
We rate the Bear Natural mattress a 9.5 when it comes to pressure relief.
This is where the Bear Natural mattress really shines. The Talalay latex used in the Bear Natural mattress’ comfort layer feels quite plush – almost like a memory foam mattress, contouring and pressure relieving which is why it’s no surprise that high-end boutique hotels use it for their rooms.
But if you think you are going to get that same stuck in the mud feel as traditional memory foam mattresses have, don’t fret. The Bear Natural’s coil unit adds a buoyancy to the bed that keeps it responsive at the same time.
Construction
The Bear Natural mattress consists of 4 layers plus a perimeter edge coil unit, all encased breathable quilted organic cotton mattress cover. The cover has a subtle stretchy feel and it’s soft to the touch as well. It also features side handles for easier handling.
The first comfort layer is made up of Talalay latex foam that’s sustainably sourced and naturally hypoallergenic making it a good choice for those who suffer from allergies.
The second comfort layer is made from proprietary foam that provides a bit more responsiveness to the bed which off-sets the cradling feel of the top comfort layer. This layer also acts as the transition layer.
The coil unit is made up of individually encased coils that feature higher gauge coils in the center for zoned support. The coil system also has perimeter edge coils that provide extra edge support to the entire mattress.
The base layer is made up of high density polyfoam that not only supports all the upper layers but also absorbs all the movement while also providing durability and stability.
We did not experience any off-gassing when we first unboxed the mattress although the Talalay latex layer does give off a slight earthy scent which is typical for natural latex mattresses.
Durability
With proper care and maintenance, the Bear Natural mattress can last a very long time – we’ve never met a Bear mattress that did not hold up well even after years of use.
