You’ve likely noticed that it’s hard to find information about which mattress size is largest because a lot of the biggest ones are rare and not all brands sell them. Our team of sleep researchers looked at the data and found that there are several extra-large options available. In this guide you’ll find descriptions of all oversized beds; what they are, their dimensions, purpose, prices, as well as who actually needs them – and whether that could be you.

What is the Largest Oversized Mattress?

The largest mattress size is the Family Bed Extra Large (144″ x 84″).

Oversized mattresses are mattresses larger than the king (76″ x 80″) and/or California king (72″ x 84″), which are the largest of the standard mattress sizes.

Oversized mattresses are not normally made and sold by regular manufacturers, but rather by specialized ones. Their size ranges from 84 by 84 inches for Wyoming size all the way to 144 by 84 inches for a Family bed extra-large (pictured below).

Oversized Mattress Options

Most people know about the California king, but this isn’t the only mattress size that is named after a state. There are three more – and unlike the California king bed, they are oversized. These unique sizes are called Wyoming, Texas, and Alaskan king beds.

The table below shows each of the mattress dimensions and the minimum room dimensions that we recommend for each size. This is just to give you an idea. Ideally, you want at least two feet of space on each side of the bed so everyone can get up easily.

Hopefully, this information will help you choose the best one for your home.

If your curiosity doesn’t stop here, we’ve listed more mattress sizes at the end of this section, even though they are much less common.

Wyoming King Bed

With 84″ by 84″, a Wyoming king bed is as long as a California king. However, a California king is narrow while Wyoming gives you plenty of width with its square shape.

Some manufacturers may give it a different name, so it’s good to know that Wyoming king is also called the Emperor size mattress.

A Wyoming king easily accommodates a tall couple with a child and a pet, or two small children.

The best thing about this mattress is that it’s the smallest of the oversized mattresses (and therefore the most affordable), but also the closest to the largest standard-sized mattress. This means that if you find a standard king size bed a bit too small for your needs, the Wyoming king is the best solution.

One possible drawback is that it can be troublesome to fit a bed frame of this size into a room that’s not wide enough. But don’t get discouraged because a Wyoming should fit in most rooms that can accommodate a standard king.

Texas King Bed

A Texas king bed is 4″ narrower than a Wyoming king and 5″ longer. Still, this is significantly longer and wider than both standard king and California king.

It’s 80 inches wide and 98 inches long. With these dimensions, a Texas king is suitable for a tall or plus-sized couple together with their children and/or pets, as long as the family doesn’t have more than four to five members.

Texas king mattresses look better in rectangular bedrooms and the minimum space we recommend for this bed would be around a 13 by 16-foot master bedroom.

If you’re stuck between a Texas king and a Wyoming king, you should know that their price points are quite similar and that while Wyoming is superior in width, a Texas King may fit better in your room. Extra leg space is another plus for a Texas, so if you have large dogs, or you’re really tall, consider a Texas King.

Alaskan King Bed

Here’s the biggest of the three common oversized beds; the Alaskan king bed that measures 108 by 108 inches. Co-sleeping families with two or three children will enjoy the size and comfort of an Alaskan king mattress.

The whole family can spread out on this bed but it requires a really large bedroom – at least 16 by 16 feet. Alaskan king mattresses are not cheap and if you’re investing in one, make sure it’s made of durable long-lasting materials.

You can even fit up to four adults on an Alaskan king, so sharing this bed can be a good solution when large families get together.

The high price and the need for a huge master bedroom could be your main problems with this mattress size. See our Alaskan king vs. California king comparison for more details about this HUGE mattress size.

Other oversized mattresses

Here are more oversized mattresses. These are quite rare, but you could find them with companies that specialize in oversized beds.

  • Alberta king bed measures 96 inches by 96 inches and as such is smaller than an Alaskan king. A family with two kids can sleep in it comfortably.
  • Family bed medium is 80 inches long and 108 inches wide – it’s somewhere between a Texas king and an Alaskan king and this makes it great for a couple with three children.
  • Family bed large has the same length as a medium but is a whole foot wider to accommodate another little person. So, a total of six people can sleep in it if we’re talking about a family with kids. As for adults, four people can sleep in a Family L bed without problems.
  • Family bed extra large is made for a family of two adults and up to five children, or a total of about five adults.

Where to Buy an Oversized Mattress

Not all mattress stores have them – you can’t just walk into a random store or visit a random website and ask for an Alberta size mattress. Do your research online to find manufacturers that make these sizes.

Some of them are Mattress Insider and Big Mattress.

Manufacturers of oversized mattresses might also agree to manufacture a custom mattress made specifically per your request.

They should also be able to offer all accessories that go with a new mattress of that size, like bed frames, fitted sheets, flat sheets, etc.

Largest Standard Mattresses

If you feel like oversized isn’t really the way to go, you can still look at other large options. There are two standard king mattress sizes and two queen sizes for you to check out. After all, they’re much friendlier for your budget and easier to find sheets for.

  • King mattress size is 76 inches by 80 inches. You can also get a split-king mattress which is basically two Twin XL beds pushed together.
  • California king mattress is narrower but longer – 72 by 84 inches. Even as such, a Cali king or split Cali king can be used for co-sleeping families as long as they’re not too big.
  • Queen mattress is the most common mattress but we placed it on this list because even at 60 by 80 inches, it’s the third-largest bed size for adults and there are still several smaller ones. If it’s made of two separate mattresses, it’s called a split-queen.
  • California queen mattress is just four inches longer than a regular queen.

Who Needs an Oversized Bed?

All of the oversized mattresses are great for tall people. They range from 84″ to 108″ in length which is actually more than enough for most tall sleepers, and just enough for extremely tall people.

But mattress length isn’t only about your height – extra length is great if you have lots of pets. It’s also great for people who like to have a super luxurious bed with several rows of pillows.

On top of that, more width gives more room to each partner – even quite large individuals can enjoy the extra space in an oversized mattress. There are families with more than two children who want to co-sleep comfortably, and then there are families with several children and several pets.

These are all good reasons to shop for oversized mattresses.
