Let’s face it: Tempur-Pedic mattresses cost a ton. Many people like to rotate their mattress to help prolong it’s lifespan, but is it really necessary for this brand? Read on to find out whether you should rotate a Tempurpedic mattress.

How often should I rotate my TempurPedic mattress?

You should rotate your Tempurpedic mattress once per year or less.

TempurPedic mattresses are made with thick layers of high-density foam and are made to last for over a decade. This is why TempurPedic says you don’t have to rotate your mattress at all.

And here at Sleepline, we always stand by what the manufacturer says. But after doing thorough research among users of TempurPedic mattresses, I’ve noticed that their older mattresses appear to last longer than the newer ones. This is why I still recommend rotating your TempurPedic mattress every once in a while.

Rotating a Tempurpedic mattress

Other mattresses are typically supposed to be rotated every 3 to 6 months, but since TempurPedic is made to be much more durable than regular mattresses, you can give it more time between rotating it, hence the one year or less recommendation.

These mattresses are super heavy, by the way. Like, if you’re a 160-lb person, you’ll probably need to multiply to move yours. After all, if you brought the mattress in yourself, you know what it takes.

Will rotating a TempurPedic mattress damage it?

Done correctly, rotation itself will not damage your TempurPedic mattress. The stress here is on “done correctly”.

Don’t forget, TempurPedic mattresses are pretty heavy. So, first, you need someone’s help. Then, you need to plan this out thoroughly.

To save yourself and your mattress from any damage:

  • remove any bedding and pillows from the bed,
  • remove any items at least 4 feet around your bed,
  • inspect your surrounding and make sure there are no items which you can knock over or break as you’re moving around,
  • if you have a TempurPedic adjustable base, make it flat,
  • adjustable bases have a metal bracket at the leg side, which is why you need to move the head side of the bed 4 feet away from the wall, slide the mattress about a foot away from the bracket, and then rotate it,
  • move the mattress by pushing in the desired direction. Do not pull by the zipper or mattress cover – you’re almost sure to damage them if you do! If you can make use of the mattress handles, do so.

This way, there’s no damage to the mattress. You’re just sliding your mattress across the base and neither of the surfaces is getting damaged.

You can regularly rotate your TempurPedic mattress with your mind at peace. You’ll even increase its longevity as your body will be putting pressure on the other half of the mattress.

If you’re not careful and you knock over an object, you could get water or other liquids spilled onto the mattress (and cleaning a Tempurpedic mattress is no fun). You could hit a sharp edge of a table or other piece of furniture and risk damaging the mattress cover. Finally, if you pull by the cover or the zipper… I mean, come on! What do you expect? Pull an elephant by a single hair and see if you’re more likely to move the animal or break the hair.

Does flipping a TempurPedic mattress make it more comfortable?

The worst thing is – it might.

First of all, the manufacturer says you shouldn’t ever flip your TempurPedic mattress because they weren’t designed to be flipped. Flipping your TempurPedic mattress is improper use and carries the risk of voiding your warranty. Also, flipping it is much harder than rotating and is way more likely to damage the mattress.

TempurPedic mattresses have a one-sided design that starts off with a removable top section of the mattress cover, then proceeds with a comfort layer of soft(ish) foam as the top layer, then a support layer, and at the bottom lies the firmest layer of dense poly foam which gives the mattress a solid base. Cooling models have a lot more to offer in the top section with special cooling materials and layers of ventilated foam which are supposed to support air circulation.

Firm models are too firm for most people anyway, so flipping a firm TempurPedic model to the other side is just going to expose you to the firmest part of this mattress and make it even worse for the pressure points.

Dos and don'ts for flipping a Tempurpedic mattress

So, why did I say that flipping might make your TempurPedic mattress more comfortable?

Well, in the event that your TempurPedic mattress doesn’t support your body properly, which might happen with soft foam mattresses (whether it’s premature sagging or something else), you’ll need a firmer option. And if your mattress is for any reason not eligible for a return or a refund, guess what? I’d try flipping it.

When you have nothing to lose, you can start experimenting. One side doesn’t work? Try the other. And if that one does, enjoy it while it lasts.

What are TempurPedic’s official mattress care instructions?

On their Product Care page, TempurPedic says this about flipping or rotating:

Each of our mattresses use our patented, one-sided design that means you’ll never have to flip, rotate, or turn it. The TEMPUR material will return to its original shape time after time, year after year.

Moving and storing

If you’re storing your TempurPedic mattress, lay it flat, never on the side or folded.

When moving, also make sure your mattress is flat. You can fold it only if it’s impossible to move your TempurPedic mattress otherwise (when moving to another room or packing a vehicle, for example). Fold the top side in and never leave it like that for a long time. If it was folded in cold weather, allow the mattress to unfold naturally. Don’t force anything.

Never use mattress handles for carrying. They are there to help you position the mattress on the foundation and are not designed to support the weight of the entire mattress.

Cleaning and washing the cover

Most mattresses from TempurPedic have a removable cover that you can wash in a machine and air dry or dry on a cool setting. Never use chlorine products or harsh stain removers.

If it’s a non-removable cover, spot-clean the mattress and let air dry.

Address any spills ASAP because the mattress shouldn’t ever get wet. The foam isn’t supposed to be exposed to liquids, and if it is, there’s no guarantee you’ll be able to remove odors completely. TempurPedic says nothing about the possibility of foam getting deformed as a result of soaking.

In case of a spill, TempurPedic recommends removing the mattress cover and then absorbing the liquid with a towel and then letting it air dry. You can turn on a fan facing the mattress to speed up the process.

The TEMPUR® material should never get wet or be washed.

Mattress pads and covers

At TempurPedic, they only recommend using their own Mattress Protector because it will not hinder the effect of the TEMPUR® material. Other mattress covers or pads add an additional layer between the mattress and your body and might change the way the mattress feels or cools you.

FAQs

How long will a TempurPedic mattress last?

TempurPedic mattresses have a 10-year warranty and are made to last at least 10 years. in reality, the average lifespan of a TempurPedic mattress is about 12 years, with some lasting less and some much, much longer than that.

Will TempurPedic mattresses sag over time?

They should never sag, but only develop indentations smaller than 0.75 of an inch in your body shape. However, there’s a number of people who complain about their Tempur-Pedic mattress sagging, but as far as I’ve noticed, this is usually with heavy sleepers on soft memory foam mattress models. I could be wrong, but there seems to be a bit of a trend.

What mattresses shouldn’t be rotated?

Only the super-rare mattresses with a special kind of zoned support can’t be rotated. This means they have a special firmness level for the shoulder area, a special one for the lower back, and a special one for the legs. If you rotate it, you get the firmer (leg) side on your shoulders and the lower back/hip part will be off. Virtually any other mattress can be rotated, even those with zoned support, as long as it is symmetrical for the upper and lower part of the body.

Conclusion

TempurPedic mattress design doesn’t require you to rotate their mattresses, but if you do, you’re likely going to prolong its lifespan by a few years.

Rotating a TempurPedic mattress regularly won’t damage the mattress, as long as you’re doing it carefully. What you shouldn’t be doing is flipping your TempurPedic mattress as the comfort layer is at the top, as well as any cooling technology. The firmest foam is at the bottom.

Whatever you decide to do with your mattress shouldn’t go against the manufacturer’s proper use and care instructions because it will void the warranty.
