Our experience with Pacific Coast Down on Top Featherbed

Testing out the Pacific Coast featherbed for back sleepers
Pacific Coast Down on Top Featherbed back sleeper test

We won’t beat around the bush here.

We’re not quite happy with how the Pacific Coast Down on Top Featherbed performed.

Sure, it’s built really nicely and designed really well – no loose threads in sight, everything is seamless, it feels and looks classy at first touch and sight – but when the time came to actually try it out (like actually lay on it and sleep on it), it felt really lumpy. Hella lumpy. No cap.

Was it the combination of the gusseted top and the down fill?

We don’t really know but it felt uncomfortable in spots which means it’s definitely going to cause issues with you, the consumer, the sleeper.

Maybe some of you might not mind that so much but we minded, and we minded a lot (sorry, Pacific Coast).

Firmness Test

pacific coast featherbed firmness level

The Pacific Coast Down on Top Featherbed is a soft to medium-soft on the mattress firmness scale which means it will add softness and plushness to your mattress.

If you’re looking to firm up your current bed, it would be best to choose a mattress topper that’s on the firmer side.

Cooling Test

True down is insulating, which means it keeps and holds warmth within.

The Pacific Coast Down on Top Featherbed contains pure down feathers which means it will retain heat and keep it in.

While this means a down-filled mattress topper would be great for those who live in colder climates, it also means it would be hell for those who tend to sleep hot.

Comfort Test

We rate the Pacific Coast Boutique Down on Top Featherbed a 3 out of 10 when it comes to comfort.

Testing to see if the topper is comfortable for side sleepers…

Remember the lumpiness we mentioned earlier? It’s for this reason alone we gave the Pacific Coast Down on Top Featherbed mattress topper such a low score.

No, the lumps aren’t hard per se – they’re made of down and feathers after all – but they way the bunch up when you lay on them just doesn’t make for good sleeping (or good anything, for that matter). We blame the gusseted top.

Can anyone from Pacific Coast weigh in, maybe?

Support Test

Nothing soft can ever offer much in the way of support and the soft, plush surface of the Pacific Coast Down on Top Featherbed is no different.

Once again, due to the cloud-soft feather fill, the Pacific Coast Down on Top Featherbed offers plushness but no actual support. If you’re looking for extra support from a mattress topper, choose a mattress topper that’s made of memory foam.

Construction

We rate the construction and build of the Pacific Coast Down on Top Feather an 8.5 out of 10.

The Pacific Coast Featherbed has very high quality construction

There’s no mistake that the Pacific Coast Down on Top Featherbed is made very well and made from high quality materials – a gusseted, quilted top, down-filled top chamber, Resilia feather-filled bottom chamber and a 230-count cotton cover.

All components of a luxurious mattress topper.

Both the down and feather fill are also certified by the RDS (Responsible Down Standard), an independent global standard that certifies that the down and feathers used in a particular product has been sourced ethically and sustainably.

In lay speak, no ducks or geese were harmed in the making of this product.

The construction is pretty simple: mattress topper cover, top chamber filled with down, bottom chamber filled with feathers – topped by a gusseted top (sorry, couldn’t find a better phrase).

The mattress cover is smooth, breathable and cool to the touch and the feather and down-filled chambers themselves felt very plush and luxurious.

But alas, altogether they feel, well, lumpy.

Durability

Toppers made from premium, high quality materials tend to last a very long time and with proper care and use, the Pacific Coast Down on Top Featherbed can last you a good 3-5 years.

What the Down on Top Featherbed looks like from the side

Bear in mind that down and feather-filled bedding tend to deflate over time and lose their initial fluffiness as opposed to mattress toppers made from man-made foam which can last a little bit longer.

Value

Though not outrageously expensive, the Pacific Coast Down on Top Featherbed still costs a pretty penny thanks to its premium components.

Sizes

The Pacific Coast Down on Top Featherbed comes in 5 standard mattress topper sizes.

  • Twin
  • Full
  • Queen
  • King
  • California King

Similar Mattress Toppers to Consider

If you’re not really feeling the Pacific Coast Down on Top Featherbed, you might want to check out these other alternatives.

Moon Pod Cloud Cover

Moon Pod Cloud Cover

You might have heard the term ‘flotation therapy’ floating around (see what I did there?) and here’s a mattress topper that actually mimics the sensation you get when you do flotation therapy.

The Moon Pod Cloud Cover mattress topper features zero gravity technology that takes pressure off your main pressure points.

Like the Pacific Coast Down on Top Featherbed, the Moon Pod Cloud Cover is soft and plush but unlike the Featherbed, you get a smoother, cloud-like sleeping experience.

Dormeo Mattress Topper

Dormeo Mattress Topper

If you want something a little firmer, check out the Dormeo Mattress Topper.

Made from memory foam, the Dormeo mattress topper also contains micro springs, offering zoned support as well as better airflow all throughout the mattress topper.

It won’t retain heat like the down-filled mattress topper from Pacific Coast.

Zoey Mattress Topper

Zoey Mattress Topper

Just like the Pacific Coast Down on Top Featherbed, the Zoey mattress topper offers a plush feel but unlike the Featherbed, the Zoey mattress topper’s quilted top does not feel lumpy at all.

Made from shredded memory foam, the Zoey mattress topper does retain a tiny bit of heat but not as bad as a down-filled bed.

Conclusion

Not a lot of bedding companies offer down-filled mattress toppers but Pacific Coast specializes in pillows, comforters and mattress toppers that feature RDS-certified down and feathers.

Though made with premium materials that looks classy and luxurious, the Pacific Coast Down on Top Featherbed disappoints with its lumpy mattress topper surface.
