Naturepedic EOS Classic back sleeper
Testing out the EOS Classic from Naturepedic…

It feels like a Tempurpedic bed.

That’s right. You heard that right.

For a latex hybrid mattress, that says a lot. And that’s the first thing we noticed when we tried out the Naturepedic mattress.

Made from all-organic materials such as organic latex, organic cotton and organic wool batting, the Naturepedic EOS Classic goes above and beyond most of the organic mattresses that’ve tried (and we’ve tried many).

We go into the how’s and why’s in detail below.

Firmness test

naturepedicc eos classic classic mattress firmness

The Naturepedic EOS Classic mattress firmness levels can be customized to your needs and preference and although this is not really unheard of when it comes to mattress firmnesses, the EOS Classic mattress is slightly different in that you are the one doing all the customizing.

And by that, we mean hands on, actually getting in there and shifting layers around.

While this may sound like a lot of work, they pay-off is that you get to customize the mattress exactly to your liking and what’s more, you will be able to change the firmness as you please.

This also means that you can share the Naturepedic EOS Classic mattress with a partner, even one who tends to be a restless sleeper (bear in mind though that the split firmness options only come with the bigger mattress sizes so Queen and up).

You get to choose between these firmness options for your layers:

  • Plush
  • Medium
  • Cushion-Firm
  • Firm
  • Extra-Firm

Strict side sleepers and combination sleepers would do well by choosing the Plush to Cushion-Firm options while back and stomach sleepers would get both pressure relief and better spinal alignment by choosing the Cushion-Firm to Extra-Firm options.

Here’s the thing though, assembling the mattress and/or rearranging the mattress firmness can be difficult for just one person to do (although it is possible).

Either expect to spend quite a bit of time on assembly or enlist the help of another person.

Cooling test

We rate the Naturepedic EOS Classic mattress a 9.5 out of then when it comes to temperature regulation.

The organic latex comfort layer of the EOS Classic coupled with the organic cotton fabric, organic wool and support coils work all work together to provide maximum cooling and air flow all throughout the mattress that there simply is no chance for any heat to be retained.

What’s more is that the already naturally cooling latex layers also come perforated which means air circulation is continuous and never-ending.

The mattress cover itself is cool to the touch.

So much so that we actually had to grab an extra comforter when we first got on the bed but this should not deter those who live in cooler climates – the organic wool batting helps keep you warm when it gets too cold.

Comfort test

When it comes to comfortability, we rate the Naturepedic EOS mattress a 9 out of 10.

Remember what we said about the Naturepedic mattress feeling like a Tempurpedic? Hear us out.

Although the Naturepedic EOS Classic is technically a latex hybrid mattress and should, in effect, feel like one, the latex layers feel contouring like true memory foam depending on the position of the coil unit (the higher up the coil unit, the firmer the mattress would feel).

Live view of our EOS Classic comfort test

But even if you choose the firmer option, the bed still feels pretty contouring just without the sinkage that’s most associated with regular memory foam giving you more responsive support.

This makes the Naturepedic EOS classic mattress a good choice for those who suffer from either back pain or chronic pain such as fibromyalgia.

Motion transfer test

We rate the Naturepedic EOS Classic mattress a 9.7 out of 10 for motion isolation.

Not what you expected from a latex hybrid mattress huh?

Hybrid mattresses, even though those that are made now are mostly made with individually wrapped coils, can still be pretty buoyant leading to some motion transfer while conventional mattresses like all-foam mattresses are pretty good at isolating motion.

Testing Naturepedic EOS Classic motion transfer
Naturepedic EOS Classic has great motion transfer, rare in a latex mattress

The Naturepedic EOS mattress contains – as we already know by now – layers of latex foam, which is also pretty buoyant and coupled with its pocketed coil unit should result in a springier bed, right?

Wrong.

The Naturepedic mattress performed exceptionally on our motion transfer test, especially on the larger bed sizes such as the Queen, King and California King sizes which are made up of two halves of a whole basically like split mattresses.

Edge support test

We gave the Naturepedic EOS mattress a 6 out of 10 for edge support.

Here’s where the Naturepedic mattress let us down a little bit.

Naturepedic EOS Classic mattress edge support
Edge support on the EOS Classic could have been better though…

For a mattress of this price, you would think it would excel in every aspect (as it should) but it does not.

Due to the construction of the mattress wherein all you do is add the layers in, there’s nothing really holding the edges together like reinforced coils or edge stitching giving the Naturepedic EOS Classic mattress very weak edge support.

Don’t get us wrong though, you’d still feel well supported on the mattress itself but if you’re someone who prefers sleeping closer to the edge of the bed, there is a 70% chance you are going to roll off the edge especially if you’re heavier-set.

Pressure relief test

Pressure relief goes hand in hand with comfort and you already know that the Naturepedic EOS Classic mattress has blown us away with its comfort performance so it’s safe to say that its pressure relief does the same.

We rate the Naturepedic EOS mattress a 9 out of 10 when it comes to pressure relief.

It must be said though that you get the most contouring pressure relief if you choose the plush firmness option but even the extra-firm option will still give you enough pressure relief that can help ease any aches and pains.

Construction

There are 5 layers to the Naturepedic EOS Classic mattress which includes the mattress cover.

The first layer is what Naturepedic calls the mattress quilt which also makes up the top cover. This quilt is made up of organic cotton fabric, organic wool batting (which also acts as the mattress’ flame retardants instead of fiberglass) and a PLA comfort layer.

The second layer is made up of 100% GOLS certified organic latex that makes up the EOS mattress’ comfort layer.

Below that lies the coil unit which is made up of fabric-encased coils.

A layer of organic cotton batting acts as the base layer of the mattress.

All these layers come encased in a mattress cover that’s made up of a blend of organic cotton fabric and organic cotton fill. The mattress cover also features a rust-proof brass zipper.

Components of Naturepedic EOS Classic mattress

Obviously you can move all the internal layers around as you wish to get your desired comfort level.

The Naturepedic EOS Classic mattress is certified by UL Greenguard, Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS) and Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS).

The mattress does not contain any harmful chemicals that can be detrimental to your health or to the environment.

Although the EOS Classic mattress does not have any off-gassing or that new mattress smell, it does come with a slightly earthy scent that’s common with natural latex and mattresses made from natural materials. This is totally normal and will dissipate within a few days of use.

Naturepedic also gives you the option to choose a non-latex alternative (for those who are allergic to latex of any form) as well as a vegan alternative (not containing any animal by-products such as wool) of the EOS Classic mattress.

Durability

Every mattress worth its salt will last for a very long time if cared for and used for its intended purpose, especially certified organic mattresses like the Naturepedic EOS Classic mattress.

Unlike polyurethane foam, natural latex foam lasts longer and is essentially more durable making pure latex mattresses like the EOS classic more hard-wearing than mattresses made from memory foam.

Since you are able to swap around the internal layers of the EOS Classic mattress, you can do this in lieu of mattress rotation but only with the bigger sizes.

For smaller sizes of the Naturepedic mattress, we recommend rotating the mattress every 3-6 months to help extend its lifespan.

Similar mattresses to consider

If the Naturepedic EOS Classic mattress does not match your needs and preferences, consider either getting the much cheaper Happsy (Naturepedic’s budget brand) or one of the following alternatives.

Naturepedic Serenade

Naturepedic Serenade Mattress

If you want a (slightly) cheaper alternative to the Naturepedic EOS Classic mattress, this is it.

The Naturepedic Serenade mattress is similar to the EOS Classic in many ways, including their latex comfort layer components and fabric-encased coils. The Naturepedic Serenade also comes in 3 firmness options making it suitable for all sleeper types.

The only difference is, the Serenade mattress is not customizable.

Latex for Less Hybrid Latex Mattress

If you want something way cheaper than the Naturepedic EOS Classic mattress, then you might want to check out the Latex for Less Hybrid Latex mattress – it’s literally in the name.

For a fraction of the price of the EOS Classic, the Latex for Less Hybrid Latex mattress is also made with premium, high quality materials that offers both pressure relief and responsive support.

Being a hybrid, it is also suitable for heavier-set individuals.

You also get to choose between 2 firmness options – a Medium and a Firm.

Again, the only difference between the EOS Classic and the Latex for Less Hybrid Latex mattress (aside from the glaring difference in price) is that the Hybrid Latex mattress does not have customizable layers.

Eco Terra Hybrid Latex Mattress

Eco Terra mattress front edge view
Eco Terra Hybrid Latex Mattress

No toxins, no polyurethane and no toxins – just like the EOS Classic. The Eco Terra Hybrid Latex mattress is another cheaper alternative option to the Naturepedic mattress.

Made fro 100% certified organic latex, the Eco Terra Hybrid Latex mattress also features fabric encased coils, latex comfort layers and a certified organic cotton cover.

It is also fiberglass-free, just like the Naturepedic mattress. It also comes in two firmness options – a Medium and a Medium-Firm.

Like the Latex for Less mattress, the Eco Terra mattress is not customizable.
