Go to a mattress store and you’ll hear sellers tell you about how they personally sleep on Tempur-Pedic and how the brand is the top of the industry. Tempur-Pedic does produce durable mattresses which tend to last longer than other mattress types, but after you scratch the surface, not everything is as perfect as it seems. So, without any further ado, let’s find out how long Tempurpedic mattresses last!

How long do Tempur-Pedic mattresses last on average?

Tempur-Pedic mattresses tend to last an average of 12 years.

A well-cared-for Tempur mattress can serve you for up to 20 years or more, as reported by many consumers. Some of the soft models could disappoint you with only about 5-8 years, especially if you’re one of the bigger Tempur crowd members. Still, broadly speaking, you should expect your Tempur-Pedic mattress to surpass its warranty by at least a couple of years.

Some people have a theory that newer Tempur-Pedic mattresses last for shorter amounts of time

than the old ones. And I’ll get into why it actually makes sense in just a second.

What is the length of the Tempur-Pedic warranty?

Tempur-Pedic mattresses come with a 10-year limited warranty.

Their toppers, mattress protectors, and flat foundations also have a 10-year warranty.

Here’s some bad news, though. It’s the kind of telltale sign that could point to degrading quality and it could support the theory I mentioned above. So, here’s the thing.

Mattresses purchased before March 14, 2014 had a 25-year limited warranty, whereas mattresses purchased after that time have a 10-year full replacement limited warranty, later renamed as a 10-year limited warranty.

An entire decade and a half is not a small drop and you should keep it in mind, whether you feel like it is a sign they might be using cheaper materials or not.

So, does your friend’s old Tempur-Pedic mattress last over 20 years? Yes? Ok, but can you expect the same if you were to buy a new mattress? That’s up to you to decide.

Factors that affect the Tempur-Pedic mattress lifespan

The lifespan of your TempurPedic mattress depends on three main factors:

  • normal wear and tear
  • weight
  • how the mattress is constructed.

I skipped some evident factors – that also go for other mattresses, by the way – such as using a proper bed frame/solid platform, for example. Also, if you’re unlucky to get a mattress with manufacturing defects, it’s obviously going to last shorter, but you’re protected from this in the warranty.

Normal wear and tear

Some indentation is normal.

The Tempur material is more resilient than ordinary memory foam mattresses, but in soft and medium models you can see that after a while, there’s a slight impression (up to 0.75 in) in the place where you sleep. Tempur material naturally softens after some time of use and this is also considered normal.

Other than that, your mattress may suffer cuts, burns, yellow stains, improper handling or storage (never store it on the side!). The more wear and tear you expose your mattress to, the shorter its lifespan.

Weight

Light as a feather? Well done, your mattress might as well live indefinitely, that is until the time itself deteriorates the foam in your Tempur-Pedic mattress.

For the rest of us, things are less fortunate. Let me switch to some realistic numbers. If you’re under 150 lbs., your weight isn’t going to do much harm.

But on the other side, 300-pound and heavier sleepers are going to make those Tempur-Pedic beds work for their money. If you’re this heavy, you might already know how long your average mattress can last.

As for your Tempur mattress, if you got a soft one, it might break down in 5-7 years and I’m afraid to say – maybe even less. I hope you picked a medium one or, if you’re brave enough, a firm one. Firm Tempur-Pedic mattresses are known to be rock hard, an eye-popping 9 or 10 out of 10 on a firmness scale. Why eye-popping? Try a firm one for a night if you really want to know.

How the mattress is constructed

Construction definitely plays a role, and memory foam mattresses last longer than hybrids.

You might ask – but why do you keep calling Tempur material memory foam?

Well, because it is a type of memory foam, and because I don’t fancy the fact that every single company out there likes to name their memory foam differently and call it “proprietary” material. We all know they just added a couple of chemicals to the regular memory foam concoction, so I refuse to confuse people any further. I used to be on that bandwagon, but I got off. It’s memory foam.

Back to my point. Memory foam mattresses, when they’re well made, have a very firm and supportive foundation/base layer that is made of high-density foam. This foam might work better than coils in supporting your body weight throughout the years.

This is why the average life span of hybrid mattresses is up to 10 years and of memory foam mattresses over 10 years. Apparently coils break down faster than memory foam.

The construction of a Tempurpedic mattress affects how long it lasts

On the other hand, soft models are made of lower-density foam and break down faster than firm models. This means that soft memory foam mattresses is likely to last shorter than a hybrid.

How to extend the life of your Tempur-Pedic mattress

You know how I said that a well-cared-for mattress can live long? Well, it’s not hard to “well care for” your mattress; it’s just four steps.

  • Rotate your mattress
  • Air it out
  • Clean it regularly
  • Use a mattress protector

Other than this, always follow the manufacturer’s instructions so you don’t go wrong somewhere and void your warranty.

Ways to prolong the lifespan of a Tempurpedic mattress

Rotate the mattress

Tempur-pedic says that you don’t have to rotate their mattress because they are so sure about the quality and don’t see the need for mattress rotation. But you can’t deny the fact the side of the bed you’re using every night is being worn out more than the other sides.

This may especially be important with their soft models.

If you notice indentations in the place where you sleep, but not the sagging mattress type of indentations; more like shallow, normal wear and tear kind of type, I’d say rotate it.

Maybe a Tempur-Pedic mattress shouldn’t be rotated as often as a standard memory foam mattress, but instead of the recommended six months, you could maybe go once a year with Tempur mattresses.

Can I flip my Tempur-Pedic mattress?

Nooo! Not that you’re going to completely ruin the mattress if you flip it, but it’s not designed to be flipped and, as the company says, “should not be flipped”.

There’s a reason why comfort layers are on the top of the mattress, and that is, you guessed it, to give you comfort. Underneath lies a support layer that keeps your spine in proper alignment, and at the very bottom, made of the highest density foam, the base layer. It’s called base because it’s the firmest and it provides a base for the entire rest of the mattress, plus you.

That being said, you also shouldn’t flip your Tempur-Pedic hybrid or memory foam mattresses because you probably like your back. And you like it when you’re not in horrible pain. Ok, let’s just say this – if you’re interested in Tempur-Pedic mattresses and you still don’t know that they weigh a ton, you should go back to the drawing board. Some people say it’s hard for them even to change sheets, and this one guy from Reddit even decided to saw his in half in order to be able to remove it from the room. That’s how heavy it was.

Cleaning supplies for a Tempur-Pedic mattress

Here’s what it looks like. It’s 20 years old, by the way. Notice how small the indentations are after two decades.

Air it out

You should air your mattress out every once in a while even if you never spilled anything over it. Your mattress collects moisture from the air, but more importantly, it collects moisture from your body (primarily sweat).

Just think about what most of us do when we get up in the morning. We get the duvet/comforter back, we don’t just leave the bed uncovered. This way we make our bed look aesthetically pleasing, but we’re covering all the dust mites and trapping all the moisture. The next night, we just get back in. This is why we need to strap the mattress of all bedding and let it breathe and air dry every now and then.

The need for this is less frequent if you live in a dry area and more so if you sweat heavily while sleeping or live in a humid area, such as near the ocean.

Collected moisture can play a role in memory foam disfiguration because memory foam isn’t supposed to be moist/wet. You should be mindful of this even when you clean your mattress. Vacuum cleaning also helps extract some of that moisture, which brings me to the next point.

Clean it regularly

Keep your Tempur-Pedic mattress clean. No need to go mad and dedicate half of your life to mattress maintenance, or any furniture maintenance for that matter, but you can add a little bit of extra care, that’s all.

See a blood stain? Get it off. Changing sheets? Take 3 extra minutes and vacuum your mattress before putting new ones on. And, of course, Tempur-Pedic mattresses have that easily removable zipped cover that you can wash in the machine.

Speaking of washing, wash bed linens weekly and change bedding regularly, don’t let them sit there until they’re so dirty that they almost give you asthma (I know this can’t really happen, but excessive dirt can affect your respiratory system). Filthy sheets make it much easier for dirt to seep through the sheets and onto the mattress.

Use a mattress protector

Mattress protectors are one more investment and actually, some people don’t like them (or they don’t like protectors of a particular brand, for instance) because there’s a chance a mattress protector changes the feel of your mattress.

Cons aside, the positive aspects of a mattress protector are that it keeps the mattress fresh and clean from:

  • dust mites
  • sweat, urine, vomit, body oils
  • spills
  • dust and dead skin cells

This basically means that you don’t need to clean your mattress so often since it’s going to remain clean for a longer time. It’s also a good way to reduce allergens inside your mattress.

You can either use a Tempur mattress protector or one from another company.

FAQs

Is it possible for a Tempur-Pedic mattress to last 20 years?

Yes, it’s very possible. There are many families which have a 20-year-old TempurPedic mattress at home and they’re still in use. Old Tempur-Pedic mattresses had a 25-year warranty, so it’s no wonder they can last so long. Nowadays they offer a mattress industry standard of 10 years, so I’m not sure if you can still expect the same quality.

Can you flip a Tempur-Pedic mattress?

I don’t know if you can, but I know you shouldn’t. Excuse my poor attempt at teacher humor; but according to the Tempur-Pedic website, “our mattresses are not designed to be flipped and should not be flipped. You may choose to rotate your mattress if you’d like, though it is not necessary.”

Conclusion

Tempur Pedic mattresses last a bit over a decade on average.

Soft models might last shorter than firmer models, and if we take two mattresses of the same firmness, an all-foam one might last longer than a hybrid. Wear and tear, body weight, and construction all play a role in the lifespan of your Tempur mattress.

If you maintain it well by cleaning the mattress, airing it out, rotating it, and using a mattress protector, you’re likely going to postpone investing in a new bed. Older Tempur-Pedic mattresses had a 25-year warranty, while new ones offer only 10 years, which might give you a good picture of what to expect.
