Side sleepers make up the majority of the population. Chances are that if you’re reading this, you are too. If you’re looking for a soft and plush mattress, the Helix Midnight Elite promises to be one of the plushiest and softest mattresses while still offering enough support to prevent back pain. We thought we’d put it to the test to see if they really mean what they say. This is what we found.

Our experience with the Helix Midnight Elite

Right off the bat, the Helix Midnight Elite felt comfortable and extremely pressure relieving with just the right amount of give and support.

It had me feeling as though I were sleeping on a really fluffy yet surprisingly supportive cloud.

And no wonder – the Helix Midnight Elite is one of the very few mattresses that I’ve come across that features not just one but two layers of micro-coils as well as a pocketed coil unit.

Add to that layers of contouring and compressing memory foam and you’ve got yourself a mattress fit for a cherub.

This is beyond awesome for a strict side sleeper or an average-weight back sleeper, but if you’re a strict stomach sleeper then you are going to have a problem – the Helix Midnight Elite’s plushy compression may throw your spinal alignment out of whack.

One thing that I didn’t quite like about the Helix Midnight Elite is its edge support (or lack thereof).

Perhaps it’s due to the Helix Midnight Elite’s compressing memory foam layers but for a mattress that touts itself as ‘elite’, it’s kinda lacking in that department.

Firmness

helix midnight elite firmness guide

The Helix website lists the Midnight Elite as a medium-feel mattress but from what I experienced it feels more like a medium-soft to medium which is around a 4.5 on the mattress firmness scale

This level of firmness is best for those who sleep predominantly on their sides as well combination sleepers who sleep on both their sides and backs.

Those who sleep on their stomachs won’t be able to get the proper support that they need on a softer mattress like the Helix Midnight Elite owing to the fact that a softer mattress surface – especially one that’s as contouring as memory foam – will cause their bodies to dip into the mattress which can then throw their spine out of alignment.

Cooling Test

We rate the Helix Midnight Elite a 7 out of 10 when it comes to cooling.

Helix utilizes their very own temperature regulating GlacioTex Elite cooling cover that helps dissipate heat and is cooling to the touch.

Although not the most cooling mattress I’ve tried, the Helix Midnight Elite still did a pretty good job at keeping heat retention at bay especially since it contains memory foam which is pretty well-known for absorbing and holding onto body heat.

Motion Transfer Test

We rate the Helix Midnight Elite a 7.5 out of 10 when it comes to motion isolation.

The famous Sleepline bowling-ball-and-water motion transfer test.

On the other hand, you have to thank the memory foam layers of the Helix Midnight Elite since they absorb cross-mattress movement which helps offset the bounce caused by the layers of coils below.

This makes the Helix Midnight Elite suitable for those who share a bed (as long you guys are both side and back sleepers only).

Edge Support Test

We rate the Helix Midnight Elite a 6.5 out of 10 when it comes to edge support.

Edge support isn’t the Midnight Elite’s strong suit…

Helix, Helix, Helix, you were doing so well but the edge support on this mattress leaves a lot to be desired.

Sure, the Helix Midnight Elite contains what Helix calls their “full perimeter reinforcement” – which is another fancy term for reinforced edge coils – but when I tried the mattress out, I found the edge support to be severely lacking.

You WILL be rolling off the bed if you’re the type of sleeper who likes sleeping close to the edge.

Pressure Relief/Comfort Test

We rate the Helix Midnight Elite a 10 out 10 when it comes to pressure relief and comfort.

The Helix Midnight Elite is an INSANELY comfortable mattress.

This is where the Helix Midnight Elite mattress really shines.

We’ve rarely given out a 10 out of 10 rating for a mattress in any category, but this is a notable exception.

Thanks to the alternating memory foam and micro-coil layers of the Helix Midnight Elite, you get the absolute contouring and deep compression that only true memory foam can give but the responsive, no-sink support of spring coils.

Lest we forget – you also get added plushness from a thick layer of luxurious, quilted foam pillow top that you feels akin to sleeping on a 5-star hotel bed.

Construction

There are 9 layers to the Helix Midnight Elite mattress. Yes, 9. Let’s break it down.

An inside look at the Midnight Elite.

Up top you get the quilted foam pillow top that also features Helix’s very own GlacioTex Elite cooling fabric that helps with heat dissipation and temperature regulation.

Next comes a comfort layer made from high density “Memory Plus foam“, a proprietary material that provides targeted pressure relief.

Underneath that lies a layer of steel micro-coils that help cradle your body and also help with proper spinal alignment.

A layer of higher density memory foam lies underneath that which helps provide even more contouring and compression.

Another layer of micro-coils follows the second memory foam layer and this micro-coil layer provides responsive support and helps prevent sinkage.

A layer of Helix Dynamic foam – a high density latex alternative foam – offers added support.

The transition layer is made up of Helix Responsive foam, another high density foam that provides stability and helps ensure durability of the coil layer below.

The coil unit is made up of 8-inch premium steel coils that helps provide zoned lumbar support for sleepers of any size.

The base layer is made up of a layer of Duradense foam that helps keep all the top layers of the Helix Midnight Elite mattress together for added stability as well as durability.

Be forewarned though – you will experience a very significant amount of off-gassing when you first unbox the Helix Midnight Elite mattress.

While this is completely normal and usually dissipates within 24-48 hours with most mattress brands, the Midnight Elite took close to a week.

Durability

I’ve tried quite a few Helix mattresses already and each and every one of them are well-made and you can really tell that they were made with premium quality materials.

The Helix Midnight Elite is no different.

This means that when it comes to durability, you can count on it to last you a very long time especially with proper care and maintenance.
