Budget bed in a box brands are inexpensive for a couple of reasons and one of those reasons is that they use affordable (yes ok, cheap) materials down to their fire barrier. And the cheapest fire retardant there is, is fiberglass. But is Novilla a mattress brand that does the same? We dug really deep to find out for you.
Does Novilla mattress have fiberglass inside?
Yes and no. From 2021 onwards, Novilla mattresses have become fiberglass-free. Before that though, Novilla used to use fiberglass as a fire retardant in their mattresses.
What made them change their minds?
You did.
Consumer complaints and lawsuits against other mattress brands have made Novilla reconsider their use of fiberglass in Novilla mattresses.
Even though Novilla as a mattress company has never received such a complaint, they have decided to become proactive and begun producing mattresses without fiberglass (including the Novilla Bliss, watch our review for more info) in 2021 which continues up to the present day.
However, if you bought a Novilla mattress (any of their mattresses from memory foam to hybrid mattresses) that was manufactured before 2021, then your Novilla mattress contains a fiberglass sock which sits right underneath the mattress covers.
As we’ve mentioned, Novilla has never received a complaint or a lawsuit regarding fiberglass in their mattresses although quite a few mattress companies in the online mattress industry have such as Zinus, Nectar and Ashley Furniture.
But why are fiberglass mattresses so dangerous and why do brands still use them if they are, you might ask?
Fiberglass or glass reinforced plastic has long been used in the building industry, boats, airlines, what have you due to their heat-resistant and anti-corrosive properties. It is also cheap and easy to manufacture hence why some mattress brands opt to use fiberglass as a cheap flame retardant in their mattresses.
Since 2007, by law mattress brands such as Novilla mattress are required to adhere to flammability standards by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission to include a flame retardant in their mattresses. While most brands utilize natural flame retardants such as organic wool, others try to cut costs by using chemical or fiberglass-based fire retardants.
Although deemed safe to sleep on, mattresses that contain fiberglass only become dangerous when the fiberglass particles escape through tears in the mattress cover thereby exposing you to potential health hazards due to fiberglass contamination.
Are Novilla mattresses safe to sleep on?
Novilla mattresses are definitely safe to sleep on, especially ones that were manufactured after 2021.
Currently, Novilla offers 6 different mattresses including their bestseller which is the Novilla Bliss, an affordable memory foam mattress that’s made out of cooling gel memory foam. If you buy a new mattress from Novilla, chances are that they were made after 2021 and are fiberglass-free.
If you, however, currently have a Novilla mattress that was manufactured before 2021, there really shouldn’t be any cause for alarm as long as you take proper care to ensure that your Novilla mattress has no cuts or tears and is being used with its intended purpose.
Using a mattress protector not only adds a layer of protection from potential fiberglass exposure but also helps keep your mattress free from stains and moisture which can extend your mattress’ lifespan considerably.
What materials is Novilla mattress made out of?
Novilla mattresses contain a variety of mattress materials depending on the mattress type.
Novilla’s all-foam mattresses contain a blend of cooling gel-infused memory foam and polyfoam while their hybrid mattresses contain a blend of proprietary memory foam, polyfoam and pocketed steel coils.
Traditional memory foam tends to be heat-retentive which can affect your ability to get a good night’s sleep, especially if you’re a hot sleeper.
Brands have then begun producing a memory foam alternative that’s infused with cooling gel beads that still provides the same contouring and pressure-relieving feel that true memory foam offers but without the dreaded heat retention.
Spring coils have long been used in mattresses (think your classic innerspring mattress) and although they already work well on their own they can be a bit springy and cause a lot of motion transfer which can be a problem if you share a bed with a partner.
Hybrid mattresses like the Novilla Vitality 12 hybrid mattress contains a coil unit that’s made of individually wrapped spring coils that helps isolate any cross mattress movement.

Risks of fiberglass exposure from mattresses
The risks of fiberglass exposure range from mildly uncomfortable to extremely dangerous that is why it is imperative to always check for tears or any escaped fiberglass particles if you currently sleep on a mattress that contains fiberglass.
The following are the potential health risks that you may faced if you are exposed to fiberglass:
- Skin rashes and skin irritation
- Eye irritation
- Respiratory problems (fiberglass can also exacerbate any chronic respiratory issues such as asthma)
- Sore throat
- Coughing and wheezing
- Lung inflammation
- Pulmonary fibrosis
Not that everyone is going to experience all of these symptoms, some may have it worse than others but studies have shown that long term exposure to fiberglass particles can have debilitating effects to a person’s (and pets!) long term health.
How to check if a mattress contains fiberglass
There are a few surefire ways to check whether a mattress contains fiberglass or not.
- Check the mattress tag – Every mattress comes with a mattress tag or mattress label and the law states that the components and materials used in the mattress must be clearly indicated on the label. Some brands do not outright say that their mattresses contain fiberglass (sneaky, sneaky) but look for the terms glass fibers and glass reinforced plastic. They all mean fiberglass.
- Price is too good to be true – If a mattress’ price tag makes you feel as though YOU are the one ripping the company off, it probably means that the materials they used are cheap as well and that includes a fiberglass fire barrier. Walk away.
- Made overseas – Safety standards in other countries especially in Asia differ greatly from that of the United States and fire safety regulation means they use the cheapest materials possible that can also help keep costs down. Although not all mattresses that are made overseas have fiberglass, the chances are higher than mattresses that are made in the USA.
- Do not remove mattress cover tag – If a mattress has a tag that explicitly states to not remove the mattress cover, it may just mean that it uses a fiberglass fire barrier. Removing the mattress cover means letting all the fiberglass particles escape. Not all mattresses that have a do not remove mattress tag have fiberglass however so always check the mattress materials.

It is fairly safe to buy a mattress that contains a fiberglass fire retardant as long as you take the proper precautions (such as using a mattress protector and constantly checking for tears or leaks) and only using the mattress for its intended purpose.
