Box spring measurements by size

Just like bed frame sizes, box springs can either be exact the same dimensions as its corresponding mattress size or a couple of inches larger. That goes for all types of box springs, including a low profile box spring and split box springs.

Twin size box spring dimensions

Twin box spring dimensions range from 75-76 inches tall and 38-39 inches wide. Twin sized box springs are meant to be used with a twin mattress.

A twin size mattress can accommodate children and average-sized adults, although it may be a little too short for tall sleepers. Twin size mattresses are also a common bunk bed size.

Twin XL box spring dimensions

Twin XL box spring dimensions falls between 80-81 inches in length and 38-39 inches in width. Twin XL box springs fit a Twin XL mattress.

Twin XL box springs and Twin XL mattresses have the exact same width as a Twin mattress but are a good 5 inches longer making it a good option for those who are tall.

Full box spring dimensions

Full size box spring

Full box spring dimensions can be around 75-76 inches in length and 54-55 inches in width. Full-sized box springs are meant to be used with a full size mattress.

With the same length as a Twin-sized mattress but substantially wider, the Full-size mattress can, in theory, accommodate a couple but it would not give them a lot of room to move around.

The Full-size mattress is perfect for a single sleeper to be able to sleep comfortably. It also fits well into smaller rooms for those who don’t have bigger bedrooms.

Full XL box spring dimensions

A Full XL box spring measures 80-81 inches in length and 54-55 inches in width. Although not very common (both the box spring and the mattress), Full XL box springs fit Full XL mattresses.

Full XL mattresses are perfect for single sleepers who are a bit on the taller side although if they are also larger in body shape, they may not have a lot of room to move around.

Queen box spring dimensions

The most common mattress size and box spring size as well, a Queen box spring measures 80-81 inches in length and 60-61 inches in width.

Queen-sized beds are an excellent choice for both single sleepers and couples – given that they are average-sized and not too tall. A Queen-size mattress is also versatile in such a way that it would fit into both smaller bedrooms and master bedrooms alike.

Olympic Queen box spring dimensions

Olympic Queen box spring dimensions range from 80-81 inches in length and 66-67 inches in width. Olympic Queen box springs fit an Olympic Queen-size mattress.

Olympic Queen beds offer 6 inches more width than a regular Queen mattress which can offer a lot more room for couples to move around. Olympic Queen mattresses are a good choice for those who prefer something a but wider than Queen mattresses but are not really fully committed to the idea of getting a King-size bed.

Split Queen box spring dimensions

Split Queen box springs are two separate box springs that measure 30-31 inches in width and 80 inches in length.

When put together, split Queen box springs make up a Queen-size box spring and can fit a Queen-size mattress.

Some mattress brands offer split Queen mattresses although they are somewhat rare. They can fit the same amount of sleepers as a regular Queen mattress.

California Queen box spring dimensions

California Queen box spring dimensions range from 84-85 inches in length and 60-61 inches in width.

California Queen mattresses have the same width as regular Queen mattresses but are far longer. California Queen beds are a solid choice for those that prefer taller Queen size beds.

King-size box spring dimensions

King-size box springs measure around 80-81 inches in length and 76-77 inches in width. King-size box springs are meant to be used with King-sized mattresses.

King beds can comfortably fit a couple and a small child. Larger sized couples would also do well by choosing a King-size bed.

Split King box spring dimensions

Split king box spring dimensions

Just like split Queen box springs, split King-size box springs are two separate box springs that measure 80-81 inches in length and 38-39 inches in width (which is the exact same dimensions as that of a Twin XL box spring).

Technically, you just get two Twin XL box springs and that would make up a split King box spring.

A split King box spring can fit either two Twin XL mattresses or one King-sized mattress.

California King box spring dimensions

California King box springs measure 84-85 inches in length and 72-73 inches in width. California King box springs are meant to be used with California King mattresses.

A favourite amongst professional basketball players, California King beds can sleep taller and heavier individuals very comfortably, with a lot more room to spare.

Alaskan King beds are usually preferred by large families who practice co-sleeping.

Wyoming King

Wyoming King box springs measure 84 inches in length and 84 inches in width. Wyoming King beds are perfect for heavier individuals who share a bed with an equally sized partner.

Texas King

Texas king box spring size

Vermont King

Vermont King-size box springs measure 96 inches in length and 96 inches in width.

Vermont King beds are a good choice for families that like to practice co-sleeping but don’t want something a little too oversized like the Alaskan King or a Family Bed.

Family Bed

The widest mattress size by far, Family Beds are perfect for very large families who like to share a bed.

FAQs

Are there different heights for box springs?

There are different heights for box springs. It all depends on the box spring brand. Usually, box springs come in standard heights which can range around 6-10 inches as well as low profile box springs which range around 3-5 inches.

Should a box spring be larger than a mattress?

Although not a necessity or something that should be set in stone, box springs don’t necessarily need to be larger than a mattress although like with bed frames, some box springs can be an inch bigger than a mattress. This can also depend on the style and make of the box spring.
