The most common bed frame sizes are the Twin bed, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King and California King. Each bed frame size has a corresponding mattress size that fits into it.
Bear in mind that bed frame manufacturers may vary a few inches more or less for each size hence why the dimensions we offer below show that.
Twin Frame dimensions
Twin bed frames measure approximately 40-43″ x 77-80″.
A twin bed frame can fit a twin-sized mattress. Twin bed frames are ideal for kids who have outgrown their baby beds or adults of average height who don’t have a lot of bedroom space.
A twin bed frame can fit into any size room but it should be at least 7 by 10 feet. Those who tend to move houses a lot may find that twin bed frames are easier to transport.
Twin XL bed frame dimensions
Twin XL bed frames have the same width as twin bed frames but are 5 inches longer. They measure 40-45″ x 82-85″.
Twin XL frames can only fit a twin XL mattress and they are excellent for taller sleepers and larger children. A twin XL frame are typically the same frame dimensions as that of bunk beds.
Similar to twin frames, twin XL bed frames will fit into any room as long as they are at least 7 by 10.5 feet.
Full and double bed dimensions
Full bed frames measure 56-59″ x 77-80″ and can fit a full-sized mattress.
Studio dwellers often have a full bed frame. Full or double bed frames are perfect for single sleepers who need a bit more room to move around. Although a full-size bed frame can fit two average-sized people, it’s going to be a very tight fit.
As we’ve mentioned, full beds are pretty popular among studio dwellers since they don’t take up much space but your room should be at least 9.5 by 10.5 feet to be able to fit a full-size bed frame in.
Queen bed frame dimensions
The most popular among bed frame and mattress sizes, the Queen-size bed frame measures 62-65″ x 82-85″ and fits a Queen-size mattress.
Among all the bed frame sizes, the Queen bed reigns supreme.
A Queen-size bed can fit a couple quite comfortably, as long as they’re not both tall sleepers. Single sleepers also often opt for a Queen-size bed as it gives them a lot of room to move about.
Queen bed frames fit into bedrooms that measure at least 10 feet wide by 10 feet long.
King bed frame dimensions
A King-size bed frame measures 78-81″ x 82-85″ and fits a King-size mattress.
King bed frames are popular amongst couples who have a bit of room and money to spare.
King bed frames are pretty easy to find. Kings beds are best for couples of any weight and size as well as families who like to co-sleep.
Since a King bed frame is pretty large, a room must measure at least 12 feet x 12 feet to be able to accommodate one.
California King bed frame dimensions
California King bed frames measure 74-77″ x 86-89″ and fits a California King-size mattress.
Although slightly narrower than a King bed, a California King bed frame is longer by a good 4-5 inches, making it a good choice for those who are well over 6 feet in height. Most pro-basketball players often prefer a California King bed.
As with a King bed frame, a room must at least be 12 feet by 12 feet to fit a Cal King bed frame.
Non-standard bed frame dimensions
There are, of course, bed frame sizes that are slightly less traditional but still readily available. These types of bed frames may even be custom-made, especially when it comes to oversized bed frames.
Single
Depending on what country you’re from, the term ‘single bed’ still refers to the same bed frame size as a Twin bed, which measures 40-43″ x 77-80″.
In North America, the term Twin is more commonly used whereas in parts of the world such as Asia and the Middle East, the term Single is preferred. Don’t even get us started on UK bed frame and mattress sizes.
Full XL
A Full XL measures 53-56″ x 80-83″ and can fit taller individuals with not a lot of floor space.
If you prefer something slightly smaller than a Queen and yet slightly bigger than a traditional Full bed frame, you might want to take a look at a Full XL bed frame.
Olympic Queen
69 inches in width and 83 inches in length, Olympic Queen bed frames are wider than a standard Queen bed frame size.
Olympic Queen beds are perfect for couples who co-sleep with a small child or a pet.
California Queen
California Queen bed frames are longer than a standard Queen bed frame by a good 4 inches. It measures 63 inches wide and 87 inches long.
If you think California only has a King in the mattress realm, think again. Just like with the California King bed, the California Queen bed size is geared towards individuals who are taller than average.
Alaskan King
We now delve into the oversized bed frame sizes and dimensions with the mighty Alaskan King bed frame.
An Alaskan King mattress measures 108″ x 108″ and its corresponding bed frame can be exactly the same size or a few inches over for a little bit of overlap.
An Alaskan King bed can fit up to 6 people and are usually used by large families that like to co-sleep.
Specialty bed frames like that of an Alaskan King are usually made to order and may take a couple of weeks to be ready so it’s best to keep that in mind when purchasing.
Wyoming King
A Wyoming King bed frame measures 84″ x 84″.
Just like all oversized beds, the Wyoming King bed is best for families that like to co-sleep or those who prefer a whole lot of sleeping space.
Vermont King
Slightly larger than a Wyoming King but smaller than an Alaskan King bed frame, the Vermont King bed frame measures 96″ x 96″.
The Vermont King bed is best for those who prefer much more leg room when they sleep.
Texas King
Measuring 98″ inches in width and 80 inches in length, the Texas King bed frame is as wide as the State itself (not really but you know what we mean).
Everything is big in Texas and the same holds true for the Texas King bed frame.
The Texas King bed is best for couples that like a lot of room.
Family Bed
The largest bed by far in terms of width, the Family Bed frame measures a whopping 144 inches in width but only (we use the term loosely here) 84 inches in length.
It’s wider than even the Alaskan King bed. The Family bed is best for you, your family, your dogs, your cats, your neighbors… you get the gist.
Standard bed frame height
The standard bed frame height should ideally be knee-level to that of an adult person. This is usually around 12-16 inches high. Of course, factoring in a mattress and bedding can add more to the height so it is best to keep that in mind.
But bed frames can also come in different heights, some higher (such as loft beds) and lower (such as low-profile bed frames). Choosing the right bed frame height all comes down to your personal needs and preferences.
Types of bed frames
Now that you know all about bed frame sizes and dimensions, you might also be wondering about bed frame types. There are tons of bed frame styles to choose from if you’re on the hunt for new bed frames.
Most bed frames typically have a base (which keeps the mattress in place) and either legs or a solid foundation for support. Some bed frame styles may also have either a headboard and/or a footboard attached and others even feature side rails, in the case of bunk beds or loft beds.
Platform bed
Platform bed frames often have a low profile but this can vary between 6 to 18 inches.
They can either be just a solid wood block all throughout or feature short legs with either a slatted or solid mattress foundation. There usually is no need to use a box spring with a platform bed although some bed frame brands offer a platform bed that can accommodate an adjustable base.
Loft bed
Loft bed frames are essentially bunk beds without the bottom bunk. The space beneath a loft bed is often utilized as a lounge or work space – some loft bed frames even come with an attached desk.
Loft beds are often preferred by those who do not have a lot of extra space. Loft beds are often quite high, allowing you to stand underneath them without any danger of hitting your head.
Bunk bed
A staple in kids’ rooms, college dorms and summer camps, bunk beds are two Twin beds (or two Twin XL beds) stacked on top of each other.
Some bunk bed frames even feature a trundle bed underneath the bottom bunk, creating a third sleeping area for anyone who might need it. Others may even feature drawers for extra storage.
Panel bed
Probably the most common bed frame of them all, panel bed frames often feature a headboard and a hollow center where you can place box springs in.
Some panel bed frames also come with bed slats as a means of support for the mattress. These days, bedding brands also offer a panel bed frame that can be used with an adjustable base.
Four poster
The ultimate luxury when it comes to bed frames and the bed frame favored by royalty, four poster beds feature four vertical posts rising from each corner of the bed, usually in line with the bed’s legs.
Traditional four poster bed frames typically have either curtains or a canopy hanging off its bedposts, providing a sense of privacy. Some people may call four poster beds canopy beds but this is technically incorrect – although four poster beds can be canopy beds, not all canopy beds are four poster beds.
Adjustable bed base
Adjustable bed frames are bed frames that feature an adjustable base that can be controlled either manually or through a remote control.
Adjustable bed bases give you the option to raise either the foot or the head of the head for added comfortability. Most bedding brands also offer added features such as zero gravity, massage options, ambient lighting, anti-snore and even a tv watching position.
Storage bed
Storage bed frames are usually wooden bed frames that have built-in storage drawers underneath the bed. Others, such as a Captain’s bed, feature storage and shelves on one side of the bed as well.
A storage bed frame is an excellent option for those who do not have much space in their bedroom or home.
Bed frame materials
Wood and metal are the most common bed frame materials used throughout the world. Some modern bed frames even feature a combination of both.
Metal
Metal bed frames are typically made from steel which offers sturdiness without being too heavy. Other types of metal frames can also be made from iron (as in a wrought-iron bed) or a combination of both iron and brass but these are often very heavy and also can be quite expensive.
Wood
Wood bed frames are often made from solid wood such as oak or pine.
Wood frames can either be simple or ornate depending on the type of wood used as well as the manufacturer. While offering the strongest support, bed frames made entirely out of solid wood can be very heavy to move around.
FAQs
If your bed frame currently has a mattress in it, you can simply check the mattress tag to see what mattress size you have. You can then figure out the corresponding bed frame size. If not, you can take a tape measure and measure the length and width of your bed frame to get its exact dimensions.
While some bed frames match the exact dimensions of a mattress, most bed frames are actually a few inches bigger than your mattress. This allows you to factor in the additions such as mattress protectors or covers and beddings such as sheets.
