Our experience with Moonbird

The Moonbird breathing device is a DIY approach to help you with proper breathing practice.

Deep breathing should come easy but we, over-stimulated, over-caffeinated (and other stuff), and find-the-quickest-fix humans that we are, often forget to take a breathing break. We even forget our own breathing rhythm, constantly flitting between short, shallow breaths to almost hyperventilation.

Not a good way to live life or prolong life, I tell you that now.

We have our apps and guided meditations and rain sounds and noise machines and books. A lot of people even go so far as to hiring breathing coaches and they can be very, very expensive.

Moonbird Breathing and Meditation Device

Tactile and compact, it works by pulsing and expanding in your hand which guides you through a breathing pace by means of slow breathing exercises (and yes, it comes with instructions and an app).

I like that it fit perfectly in my hand – not too big, not too small – but if you’ve got bigger hands, it may be a bit too small.

It’s also portable, which is very convenient for those who need to take a little breather (pun intended) throughout their day. Slip in a little breathing exercise between those stressful hours in the office and you’re good to go.

Of course, we ran it through a series of tests to find out if it really does help with sleep problems.

Breathing exercises test

Based on our performance tests, we give the Moonbird a 5/5 when it comes to breathing exercises.

You can choose between following the pre-set breathing exercises (box breathing) or you can set your own at a pace that’s comfortable for you.

You can personalize your own exercises and set a default exercise that you can come back to at any time you want.

All you need to do is breathe in as it expands and breathe out as it contracts. Breathing exercises help regulate your heart rhythm as well as your heart rate variability (HRV).

It’s pretty easy to follow as long as you’re the type of person who is not easily distracted by outside sources or your environment (we suggest trying the Moonbird out for the first time in a quiet room).

Once you get used to the set rhythm, especially with the tactile feedback, you’ll definitely find yourself following the tempo without any thought.

Battery life test

We rate the Moonbird’s battery life as 3 out of 5.

It takes around 3 hours for the Moonbird battery to fully charge. Once it’s charged, you can use the Moonbird device for approximately 6 sessions which is around 2 hours.

It’s not bad, but not entirely mind-blowing either, especially for its price.

Does it help relieve anxiety?

Let’s face it.

Breathing exercises can help you relax, whether with a device or not. As with any exercise, consistency is the key though.

Anxiety can manifest itself differently for everyone so using the Moonbird can have varying effects for different people.

moonbird in use
Moonbird is comfortable and ergonomic

For me, I would have to say that it definitely helped me regulate my breathing which in turn helped me practice slow breathing techniques and again, helped me feel more relaxed.

But what I can say is it certainly helps relax the the nervous system enough to make an impact on your mental health.

Does it help improve sleep?

Did it help me get better sleep?

I would say it does but it took a couple of nights of use to really get the hang of it so if you are looking for instant results, this may not be the device for you.

It does help improve sleep, but it may take a few nights before it kicks in

While it did help me curb my anxiety, sleep results from the Moonbird device may vary depending on factors such as health, age and underlying health issues.

Appearance and unboxing experience

When you first unbox the Moonbird, you get the device, a charging cable, a protective carrying pouch as well as a manual with guided exercises to help you get started.

With the manual, you can also set you your own breathing exercise based on the exercises provide if you so wish. Or you can keep it as is with its preset exercises which are actually already pretty good.

Appearance-wise, the Moonbird device looks sleek, and it’s also easy to hold but (and a very big BUT here), if you have a large hands, you might find the Moonbird to be a little too small.

Similar Stress Relief Devices to Consider

If the Moonbird device does not tickle your fancy, you might want to consider these other devices that can also help you regulate your breathing and help provide proper breathing exercise.

Apollo Wearable

Apollo Wearable stress-relief device similar to Moonbird
Apollo Wearable uses vibrations to train your nervous system

If you want something to wear rather than hold, you can try the Apollo Wearable.

It looks, if you are into that kind of thing, like an Apple Watch on steroids. Its vibrations helps help rebalance your central nervous system which in turn helps you feel calmer and more in control.

You can wear the Apollo Wearable as a band on your wrist or ankle or you can clip it to your clothing or shirt collar.

You can set your own vibration intensity which typically lasts 20 to 40 minutes.

The thing about the Apollo Wearable is that they recommend you to use it for at least 3 hours a day to be able to reap its full benefits – but not everyone has that much time to lend to a breathing break.

Muse S Headband

Muse S Headband alternative to Moonbird
Muse S Headband is a similar stress-relief device

If you want something a little bit more high-tech, the Muse S Headband is meant to be worn around the head.

It uses ECG sensors (yes, like the ones used to check your heart) that detect your brain wave activity and provide you with real-time feedback in the form of gentle audio sounds that is supposed to help you relax and fall asleep.

Caveat: not everyone wants to wear something around their head.

Sensate

Sensate stress-relief device
Sensate is another stress-relief device you might want to consider

The Sensate device can comfortably fit in the palm of your hand but you are meant to place it on your chest or wear it on a cord like a necklace.

It works by emitting infrasonic frequencies and sound which helps signal your vagus nerve which connects to both the brain and the gut, helping you feel more relaxed. The Sensate device is also used to aid in guided meditation.

But, here’s the thing, it may sound a little woo-woo for some people.
