They’re guaranteed to give you a good night’s sleep (yes – we’ve tested them), are made from Tuft and Needle’s very own Adaptive foam and are Greenguard Gold certified. But are they fiberglass-free? Let’s find out.
Do Tuft and Needle mattresses have fiberglass?
No, Tuft and Needle mattresses do not contain any fiberglass. Tuft and Needle uses a knit blend of polyester and cotton that has been treated with food grade salt as a fire barrier for all of their mattresses.
All-foam mattresses have a high risk of becoming a fire hazard so Global and Federal Flammability standards require all mattress brands to include fire retardants in their mattresses (and not just in all-foam mattresses; hybrids and innersprings too).
Many mattress brands, like Tuft & Needle, use fire barriers (such as natural flame retardants) that are fiberglass-free but other mattress manufacturers use a fiberglass sock as a way to cut costs.
A fire retardant or fire barrier that contains fiberglass particles within its mattress cover or a fiberglass fire sock inside draws potential health risks to both humans and pets that come into contact with any fiberglass content. These health risks can run the gamut from skin rash to respiratory problems to the more serious lung tears which may require surgery.
Fiberglass particles are a continuous glass filament that are almost invisible to the naked eye. Fiberglass is pretty effective at repelling heat and open flame and they are also inexpensive, hence why some mattress brands prefer to use them as a fire retardant.
When used as a fire barrier, these fiberglass particles are usually contained within a fire sock that either sits underneath the top layer of the mattress or right within the mattress covers.
If the contained fiberglass stays within the fiberglass sock inside the mattress, then the mattress is deemed pretty much safe to use.
It becomes a problem when the fiberglass escapes.
Although mattress manufacturers that use fiberglass take many precautions to ensure safety of their mattresses during the manufacturing process, the risk is always there when sleeping on mattresses that contain fiberglass, even if your house is equipped with a state of the art HVAC system.
What material does Tuft and Needle use as a flame retardant?
As mentioned previously, Tuft & Needle mattresses contain a fire barrier that’s made from a knit blend of polyester and cotton that’s been treated with food grade salt.
Salt, you might ask?
Hear me out: salt is scientifically proven to be an excellent flame retardant. Salt cools down hot surfaces and helps prevent fires from spreading.
Although Tuft & Needle uses a blend of manmade and natural materials, as a mattress brand they ensure that no fiberglass particles nor harmful chemicals were utilized in the manufacturing process of any of their mattresses including the Tuft and Needle Original, Tuft and Needle Mint, and Tuft and Needle Mint Hybrid.
Are Tuft and Needle mattresses safe?
Aside from not containing any fiberglass, all of Tuft & Needle’s mattresses are certified by both CertiPUR-US and Greenguard Gold. This makes Tuft & Needle one of the safest mattress options available on the market today.
CertiPUR-US certifications ensure that a foam product is free from toxic chemicals and gasses while Greenguard Gold tests for over 10,000 different chemicals and VOCs that could harm indoor air quality.
While one may think that only mattresses made with all-natural materials are the safest mattresses to use, that’s not always the case. Memory foam, memory foam alternatives and poly foam are all manmade materials that are deemed safe to use, as long as they do not contain any harmful chemicals and/or fiberglass. Fiberglass-free mattresses guarantee a safe and good night’s sleep.
How can you tell if a mattress contains fiberglass?
There are more than a few ways to find out if a mattress contains fiberglass. Some signs are easier to spot than others but these are the telltale signs you should definitely watch out for:
- A “Do Not Remove Mattress Cover” tag – Non-removable mattress covers (and non-machine washable mattress covers too for that matter) are usually a sign that mattresses contain fiberglass. Removing the mattress cover of a mattress that contains fiberglass would allow the particles to escape and spill out. And no, not even a mattress protector is going to help you. But bear in mind though that not all mattresses that have a “do not remove mattress cover” tag may contain fiberglass which brings us to the next thing on our list..
- Check the mattress label – By law, every mattress brand is required to state every material used in their mattresses. Some brands can be sneaky and try to cover up fiberglass with other, less ominous sounding words such as glass threads, filigree glass, glass wool, glass reinforced plastic. These are all fiberglass.
- Made in Asia – A lot of great products in the world are made or assembled in China or other Asian countries. That is a fact. But a lot of brands also try to cut costs by outsourcing production and materials to countries where labor is cheap and output is high. Most Asian countries do not have stringent testing protocols when it comes to mattress production and because fiberglass is cheap, this is what is usually used as flame retardants in mattresses. Always check where your product is made.
- A price that’s too good to be true – Cheap materials means cheaper prices and if a mattress’s price is a little too good to be true, then not only can the mattress contain fiberglass but other cheap and harmful materials too. Walk away.
