Long has the rose been touted as the ultimate flower of love and beauty, and the multitude of colors it can come in each have their own, significant meaning. You know, red for passion, yellow for friendship, white for purity and so on, but.. Have you ever heard of a black rose? Whilst there are no true black roses, horticulturists have found a way to cultivate dark crimson roses so exquisitely deep that  they look almost black (be still my dark, gothic heart). That is just one of the many roses you can find in Sisley Paris’ Black Rose Skin Infusion Cream.

We all know by now that the French have paved the way for a lot of things that have to do with beauty and pleasure, but the three most notable things the French are very well known for are: perfume, Champagne and skincare. Sisley, like most upmarket French companies, is family owned and operated. Established in 1976 by the late Hubert d’Ornano and currently managed by his children, Philippe and Catherine, the name Sisley has now become synonymous with the words ‘luxury skincare’.

But why, you might ask, should you go for luxury when there are many other offerings in the beauty market that would cost significantly less? Good question. Why, exactly?

Au Naturel

It no longer is a secret that French women abhor slapping on a ton of foundation. In fact, they go out of their way to forego wearing makeup altogether, whenever they can. Well.. maybe just a coat or two of mascara and of course, the ever-present red lipstick – patted on with a finger of course,  never swiped on directly from the bullet – for that just bitten, just kissed look (see the current French It girls: Jeanne Damas, Camille Rowe, Caroline de Maigret as examples). French women believe that skin, as much as humanly possible, should be kept natural and those pesky little things that one may call imperfections (such as freckles, a beauty mark, etc) are what make a woman truly beautiful. This belief has trickled down to the way French skincare is created and marketed. Skin is treated like a canvas – a canvas that is left devoid of all garish paint and useless accoutrements, a canvas that lets its own texture be the art – to be prepped and primed with only the barest minimum but with the best ingredients nature can offer.

Based on the type of rose, it takes approximately about 10,000 blossoms to fill a single 5ml bottle, making rose essential oils some of the most expensive essential oils in the world. If that isn’t explanation enough for the cost of high end face creams that contain rose oils, then consider this: each flower must be handpicked either early in the morning right after they’ve been kissed by the dew or at sundown, when their aroma is at its most potent – again, it depends on the type of rose. Sisley’s Black Rose Skin Infusion cream contains not one, not two but three types of rose extracts: the Black rose, Alpine rose and May rose. And while roses are at the forefront of the Black Rose Skin Infusion cream, they aren’t the only botanicals in the formulation. The Black Rose Skin Infusion cream includes:

  • Black Rose oil extract – moisturizes and softens
  • Black Rose aqueous extract – surface smoothing effect
  • Alpine Rose extract – combats the dulling
  • May Rose water – softens and freshens
  • Alkekengi calyx extract – helps to protect skin against the visible effects of environmental stress factors
  • Padina pavonica extract – moisturizes and plumps
  • Hibiscus flower extract – tones the skin, gently exfoliates
  • Shea and Camellia oils – soothes the skin and provides long lasting comfort
  • Vitamin E acetate – fights free radicals
  • Biosaccharide solution – creates a moist film on the skin’s surface
  • Glycerin of vegetable origin – increases skin hydration and relieves dryness, helps locks moisture in

Science has proven that every plant extract contains key ingredients with specific actions and with this in mind, Sisley has created a moisturizer that is ideal for both daytime and nighttime use.  Meant to be used daily, it feels like a hybrid between a rich cream and a gel texture which can benefit all skin types, from dry to oily to combination skin. This unique texture makes it perfect for those of us who love wearing night creams, especially paired with an anti-wrinkle pillow.

Upon application, the silky texture transforms into micro-droplets of water which instantly and effectively permeates the skin leaving it immediately plump (read: younger looking) and moisturized. Be that as it may, a few oily skin sufferers have found that the cream was a little too rich for their skin so please bear that in mind. Also, be forewarned, especially those of you with strong aversions to rose scented products; there is a slight floral scent to the blush tinged cream although it is not at all cloying. Encased in a metallic rose colored jar, each Black Rose Skin Infusion cream, comes with its own tiny spatula for a more hygienic application.

As with all things in life that require constant use for the long term effects to be worthwhile, moisturizers must be used continuously and religiously for one to be able to enjoy its effects and the Black Rose Skin Infusion cream is no exception. While immediate results, such as visibly moisturized skin, can happen, no cream – no matter how expensive – can make miracles occur (well, not yet anyway), but Sisley sure does come close.
