Love it or Hate it, you need Retinol

While retinol to some, may sound like a skin care ingredient that’s a little too daunting due to the fact that there are a plethora of do’s and dont’s when it comes to using it; plus a myriad of possible side effects – both short term and long term – it’s no wonder a good number of people steer clear of it altogether.

Yet there’s a reason why retinol is a gold standard amongst skin care experts (read: dermatologists) and skin care companies have been churning out retinol products like there’s no tomorrow that standing in front of the anti-aging section in the beauty aisle is enough to give one vertigo. But even when pitted against the heavy hitters, Olay’s Regenerist Retinol 24 Night Moisturizer remains a firm favorite.

As a child, you’ve probably seen many a bottle with the words ‘Oil of Olay’ on your mom’s (and grandma’s) vanity table. First introduced in 1952, Olay sold only one product – and one product alone – up until 1985 which was their Beauty Fluid. Throughout the ‘50s to the early ‘90s, Olay, along with a really popular cold cream, were the mainstays in a woman’s skin care arsenal. With the advent of technology and research, skin care companies and their customers evolved along with them.

Now, you hear words like ‘skin barrier repair’ and ‘AHAs/BHAs’ thrown casually about in conversation. Now, more than ever, the average consumer is able to wade through the jungles of beauty aisles armed with bullets of knowledge gleaned from peer reviews, monthly visits to the dermatologist/allergist, beauty magazines, YouTube, Google, you name it. Now, we get to pick and choose products that are specifically tailored to our needs and wants.

Retinol (which is Vitamin A, by the way) and its derivatives have been proven time and time again through numerous clinical trials to aid the skin in boosting cell turnover, maximizing collagen production, controlling overactive sebaceous glands, fighting acne and reverse photo aging caused by sun damage (sorry, sun worshippers, i.e. me).

Experts agree that those who begin incorporating retinol into their skin care regimen in their mid 20s to early 30s are the ones who can benefit the most through preventive maintenance although that’s not to say that it’s too late for those of us who are past our mid 30s and up – it just means that us yummy mummies must up our skin care game. As the old adage goes, it’s never too late to start.

Olay’s Regenerist Retinol 24 Night Facial Moisturizer is meant to be used at night (preferably with an anti-wrinkle pillow), before bed, like most products containing retinol, owing to the fact that it makes skin a bit more sensitive to the sun. And this is a good thing. Why? Because it then forces you to wear sunscreen during the day and even when you do not use retinoid products, you still must wear sunscreen. This is the number one skin care rule a dermatologist tells you as soon as you step into their office.

Containing not only retinol but niacinamide (Vitamin B3, which can help even out and brighten the skin tone and reduce the appearance of wrinkles) as well, Olay’s Retinol 24 Night Moisturizer’s ingredient list is short and sweet. No fillers such as heavy fragrances or yucky dyes, you only get what you truly need. Straightforward and simple. In today’s chaotic world, sometimes something simple is what we need, especially when it comes to caring for the face.

It usually takes 6 – 12 weeks of continued use for a product to show results, but after just a night of using Olay’s Retinol 24 Night Moisturizer, my freckles have become visibly lighter and my pores looked somewhat smoother. And for something that costs a little more than half the price of the leading night cream brands in the market, that is saying something. No, wait. That is saying a lot of things.

While I am one of the many who sing retinol’s praises, the plethora of do’s and don’ts and the possible side effects may still come into play, even with something suitable for sensitive skin like Olay’s Retinol 24 Night Moisturizer. Number one on the list: I know I’ve already said this before but sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen. Your 65 year old skin will thank me later. Do spot test. Don’t forget your neck and decolletage; these areas could sometimes show more damage than on your face.

Whilst retinol may not be as potent as tretinoin, another type of retinoid, there still could be some side effects such as drying of the skin, flaking, sudden onset of mild acne and rashes. Bear in mind though, that some of these side effects could also be a sign that that the retinol is working – your skin is essentially shedding itself, making way for newer, fresher skin and the acne onset could be purging but the differences could be very, very subtle so please always be on the lookout.

Important disclaimer: If a rash develops though, please stop use immediately and see your dermatologist.

Reap the retinol rewards

Barring the surgery route, retinoids are the obvious choice to younger looking skin. Like I said in the beginning, it could be daunting, especially if you fall into the belief that retinols are only for mature skin but the earlier you start, the longer and faster you reap the rewards.

Like they always say, a life lived in fear is a life not lived at all.
