White noise machines promote relaxation so you can easily fall asleep. They produce constant soothing sounds that allow the brain to settle and get into a state that is conducive for sleep. This process helps quiet the mind and prevents users from focusing on disruptive sounds that can interfere with the process of falling asleep. Before the advent of sound machines, light sleepers had to wear noise-canceling headphones just to get a few hours of sound sleep and babies get woken up by the slightest of sounds like that of a closing Ubbi Diaper Pail.
And then came the Dohm DS. This is a sound machine that backed by decades of studies and professional experience. This is also the official sound conditioner of the National Sleep Foundation and that’s saying something.
Classically Designed White Noise Machine
At 5.8×5.8×3.8 inches the Dohm DS is bigger than most white noise machines. It is larger than the LectroFan sound machine that we tried but the size of the DS is still manageable. We managed to place it our window sill without it tipping over. You can also place it in your nightstand and we’re confident that it can still provide you with a great night’s rest. Due to its dimensions, the DS is also heavier than the LectroFan Evo. But at 1.3lbs, it’s still light enough for you to consider taking it when you fly without incurring baggage penalties. They come in white, black and tan colors. The colors that they used are classic and mute colors and it makes sense for us. We certainly don’t want a sleeping aid with bright colors that might stimulate our brains instead of calming them. A power cord that uses 120V powers the device. Sadly, there is no option to use batteries in this device. We would have loved a battery option so we can use it even while traveling by road.
Another thing that we hope they include in their next model is a sleep timer. It will mean energy savings since the device will just power off after a predetermined time.
How will it work for me?
Dohm DS works by generating white noise through a built-in fan that mimics the sound of rushing air. This is a classic sound machine that doesn’t use any digital sound. One thing that potential buyers should realize is that this is a white noise machine. Period. We know that newer white noise machines like the Homedics SoundSpa can also play lullabies or nature sounds like raindrops or waves or waterfall sounds that mask background noises to help users get restful sleep. This is not that kind of sound machine. It also doesn’t generate pink noise or brown noise. It sticks to its signature sounds that for decades has been helping people get to sleep and stay asleep.
This device has a dual speed motor housed in an acoustic shell. The dual speed gave us the freedom to choose the tone and volume that is just right for our needs. The volume control is fully adjustable with just a simple twist. You can also make the sound higher or lower in pitch so you can find a sound that is most relaxing for you and can help you sleep soundly. Since we live near a busy intersection, we decided to use the deeper tone at a higher volume. The said setting proved to be just enough to drown out the unwanted noises that keep on interrupting our nightly rest. We also noticed that the sound produced by our air-conditioning unit got masked entirely by the fan sound of the DS.
Does It Sound Natural?
As we have mentioned above, this device doesn’t use any digital recordings. Dohm sound machines use asymmetrical fans that produce fan sounds without actually blowing out air. And although it generates fan sounds, it doesn’t have the rattle and vibrations often emitted by regular fans. After a few days of using this device, we noticed that the low-speed option is ideal for dealing with sounds with low-frequencies like footsteps while the higher pitched sounds work great in masking the sound of barking dogs or for those who suffer from tinnitus. The sound quality greatly improved because it doesn’t have any noticeable loops because it uses a mechanical fan to generate white noise.
Is This Device Durable?
This is something that we liked about this white noise generator. The device doesn’t just look sturdy, it is sturdy. Marpac, the device’s manufacturer has been in the white noise machine business for decades and it is evident in this product that they have perfected their production process. Although the device has plastic components, they used the kind of plastic that doesn’t feel brittle. They were able to come up with a device that can last a long time. Most machines that use twisting action loosen after repeated use but the twisting part of the DS remained tight.
