Noise is one of the top reasons why most of us cannot sleep properly. It’s almost impossible to get a great night’s sleep if you live in an area where you have traffic 24/7 and dogs barking at every shadow they see. Thankfully, we now have a wide range of options when it comes to white noise machines that can help us tune out these unwanted noises. From the basic mechanical fan sounds, these machines have significantly improved their sound quality. They now adapt sounds we usually hear in nature. Some even work with iOS or Android compatible apps to enhance their effectivity. Others have unique digital controls instead of the usual knobs and buttons.
The Lectrofan Evo is one of these gadgets invented to help us fall asleep amidst loud outside noises. It is a machine that produces white, pink, or brown noise, which are all soothing to the ears, and ocean sounds to usher us to dreamland.
Sleekly Designed Sound Machine
The Lectrofan Evo is a device that wants to capitalize on the massive success of the original Lectrofan. Compared to the original, this Lectrofan is quite sleek. It also features 22 unique digital sounds which include 10 fan sounds, 10 white noise sounds, and 2 ocean surf sounds.
One of the things we noticed is the addition of the 3.5mm jack where you can connect a headphone. This allows users to listen to the relaxing sounds without disturbing anyone else. You can also plug a speaker to this jack if you want to have a louder sound machine. The device is compact in design and doesn’t take up too much space. It is sleeker than the somewhat bulky Dohm DS. We were able to place the Evo in the corner of our nightstand without having to move our lamp and other knick-knacks. The device comes in three styles, black, white, and charcoal. We got the charcoal one since it looks classy and the color is easy to maintain since it doesn’t attract too much dirt.
Our Evo came packaged with a power cord and the obligatory owner’s manual. The power cord is detachable and has a USB-A plug on one end that connects to the power adapter. If you have one of those power strips with surge protectors then you can just directly plug the power cord to the port meant for USB cable chargers.
You can find the controls on the top of the device. You have the power switch, the timer, volume controls and the controls for the fans and the noise variations. One thing that we would have liked to see in the Evo is port labels. The 3.5mm port and the one for the AC doesn’t have any labels and it’s easy to confuse the two. The bottom part of the machine has a label where you can find its serial number.
How does it work?
Just like any other white noise machines, the Lectrofan Evo uses white noise to aid users in sleep and relaxation. The device uses state of the art technology to play meticulously selected and realistic sounds. The sounds used by the device are as follows:
White Noise: this is a broad category of sounds that include low-frequency, mid-range, and high-frequency sounds. We can compare these kinds of sounds to that of a waterfall. The sounds are those of rushing water falling and hitting different kinds of surfaces.
Pink Noise is at the louder at low-frequency end of the sound spectrum and becomes softer at the higher end. We can compare it to the sound of regular rainfall.
On the other hand, Brown noise is even more profound and stronger at the low end of the sound spectrum. It also lacks the high-frequency sounds that we often find in white and pink noise. Its akin to the sound of gentle waves.
The controls in this sounds fan are pretty simple and straightforward. You have the white/pink/brown noise button that you can use to navigate through the different sounds. We checked the owner’s manual and there are different sounds listed like brown, chestnut, and coral. The control button for the fan lets you control the fan range so you can select a lighter sound like that of a quiet ceiling fan or the more powerful one that sounds like those large industrial fans.
More Than Just For Sleeping
One thing that we love about this device is that it is more than just a sleeping aid. Sure, they market the Evo as a device that can help users fall asleep and stay in a deeper sleep state all night long. But we found some other uses to this device. For one, we find it useful for studying. Most students struggle when reviewing for exams because they can’t concentrate. Distractions can come in different forms like noisy roommates, or the sound of traffic. The white noise generated by the Evo can help mask these noises so students can concentrate on their review materials. When we’re still students, we found the sound of the ocean calming and helpful in keeping our concentration sharply focused. Parents can also use it as a speech privacy assistant if they need to discuss private matters.
The good thing about this device is that it is very portable. It’s hardly bigger than a closed fist and moving it from room to room is comfortable. Students can use it in their rooms or their study area and return it to their parent’s room afterward. This is a plug and play device so there is no need to set-up the device after moving it to another room.
We don’t recommend it for use in nurseries though. If you have an infant in the house, the safer choice is the Lectrofan Kinder. It has a wide range of sounds for the young ones. It has white noise and fan sounds. Unlike the Homedics MyBaby, the Kinder plays lullabies are sure to help babies fall asleep. The sound levels and frequencies of the Kinder are also specially selected for the sensitive hearing of babies.
Ideal Travel Companion
Since it is portable, it is also ideal for those who travel frequently. A common complaint about sleeping aids is that they are often bulky and troublesome if the user moves travels a lot. This makes the machine a significant investment since staying in a hotel can be a hit or miss. You might get lucky and get a room that is quiet and you can sleep peacefully. Then there are times when luck is not on your side and you’re booked in a room facing the busy street or you get rowdy occupants on the room next to yours. With the Evo, we’re confident that the problem of sleeping in hotels will be a thing of the past.
The solid form factor of the Evo is also a plus for travelers. It doesn’t have any moving parts that might break off when you bring it during your travels. We’re always wary of bringing such devices when we go out of state because these things have a habit of breaking during transit. We’re pretty confident with this white noise machine though. It looks and feels sturdy. The device looks as if it can withstand long travels.
Value for Money
This is a reasonably priced sleeping aid. And when we consider the benefits of such a machine, its price becomes even more reasonable. The Evo comes with a standard one-year warranty. Buyers can also extend the warranty by another 2 years.

Accolades & Praise for LectroFan
- Top Products for Sleep: best white noise machines.
- Set Up Process/Ease of Use
- Number of Sound Choices
White noise devices are becoming more common these days. It may have something to do with our surroundings getting noisier because of more cars and people. With the help of unique devices like the Lectro Fan Evo, we can overcome unwanted noises that can hamper our ability to sleep soundly. This device has a great selection of nature sounds that are tested to help induce a restful sleep. We like the simplicity of the device and the controls that are easy to use. Even though the device uses state of the art technology, it doesn’t look intimidating. We also liked that its compact design makes it portable. We can easily carry it to another room if needed. We can even safely tuck it into our luggage when we travel. And speaking of traveling, this device is sturdy and safe to carry. It doesn’t have any moving parts that might break during trips. Needless to say, the price is a huge consideration for us. This price is reasonable considering all the benefits we derived from it. Another indication of the quality of the Evo is the option to extend the warranty for an additional two years. Even if we chose not to get the extended warranty, just knowing that ASTI is willing to provide up to three years of warranty speaks highly of the quality of their product. They won’t be offering such an extended warranty if they are not confident with their workmanship. We have some minor complaints about the product like the lack of labels on the ports but that complaint pales in comparison with the overwhelming number of positives that we have for this product. In the end, the Evo is a white noise device we would gladly entrust the quality of our sleep too.
