Babies need a quiet place for them to stay asleep. There are now numerous options parents can choose from if what they want are devices that can help babies get a good night’s rest. Some devices emit the sound of ocean waves or play lullabies to calm down babies and usher them to sleep. Although lullaby sounds are helpful, they may not be enough to keep babies asleep for more than a few minutes at a time.
Hatch Baby’s Rest Night Light is a multi-functional device that acts both as a night light and as a sound machine. This device uses scientifically proven light colors that promote healthy circadian rhythms so your kids can enjoy a good night’s rest. It is also proven effective in stimulating melatonin production with white noise to help a baby or a toddler fall asleep. It uses the same principles as that of the Soundspa Lullaby that also has adjustable volume, plays lullabies and emits lights.
This device is easy to customize, program and control from a smartphone so you can stay in bed and still ensure that your sleeping baby enjoys a restful sleep. With the help of this device, you can customize the hues, brightness, and soothing sounds in your nursery. You can even coordinate styles with your child’s room by purchasing matching coverlets in fun patterns and colors.
A Welcome Addition to Your Nursery
For a device that has several functions built in, the Hatch Baby Rest is small and quite light. We find it easy to carry during those times that we need to spend away from home. There is a touch-sensitive chrome-colored ring around the speaker. Touching this ring powers on the device while additional short touches will allow you to cycle through the six stored light and sound combinations. A long press will power down the device. The device looks great enough on its own but you can still purchase coverlets that will allow you to match the design of the device to the overall theme of your child’s room.
The rest of the controls are at the bottom of the device. There is a power button that you can use the same way as the touch ring. The Forward button lets you cycle through the preset sound/light combinations. You can also find a play/pause button that you can use if you want to silence the device without completely powering it off. There is also a button that allows you to flip back through programs, as well as buttons that let you adjust the brightness and volume.
The positioning of the buttons on the bottom of the device caught us off guard. We felt a bit inconvenienced with the position of the controls. The only rationale we can come up with is that the manufacturer doesn’t want the buttons to “destroy” the aesthetics of the device.
Keep Connected Using Your App
This smart device uses Bluetooth connectivity and is compatible with both Android (KitKat or higher) and iOS (9 or higher). When connected to your smartphone via the Rest app, you can use your mobile device to do simple things like power on or off the device. This is somewhat of a letdown. We expected the remote functionality to be Wifi enabled since Bluetooth has a limited range.
Features Specially Made for Babies
One of the things we immediately liked about this device is the remote-control functionality. We can use our phone’s Bluetooth to switch it on or off and even change some settings like the color, brightness, and volume. Since our bedroom is just across the nursery, we don’t even have to leave our bed if our little munchkin suddenly wakes up in the middle of the night. We also didn’t feel the need to get a baby monitor or a baby shusher. If your baby continues crying even after you power on the Rest, you can remotely turn on the nightlight so you can enter the nursery and use the soft glow so you can walk without tripping over toys. This is a better alternative compared to switching on the lights since the harsh room light can just stimulate the baby and make it even more challenging to get make the baby fall asleep.
Another feature that we like is the automation feature. It can help establish a healthy sleep routine for the young ones. Through the use of this feature, you can set a time-to-rise to let your toddler know when it’s time to get out of bed. This saves parents the trouble of having to wake up their children each morning personally. You can also set a bedtime program that comes with fun colors and music that automatically plays on in the evenings. The lights and music combination will be the cue for children that their bedtime is near and they should ready themselves. We find these programs useful in reinforcing a sense of responsibility to our children. They learn how to manage their time and how to adhere to schedules. This is also a great feature for kids who have cochlear implants since the lights and sounds can help them gradually ease into a sleeping state of mind.

Accolades & Praise for Hatch Baby
- Top Products for Sleep: best white noise sound machines.
Babies and toddlers are hard to get to sleep and wake up. The Hatch Baby Rest is a useful device that can make this task easy. The lights and sounds create a sleep environment that prepares the young ones for a good night’s sleep.
This is also a useful device for instilling to kids a sense of responsibility through sleep schedule adherence. We also love the remote-control feature even though we wish that it works via Wifi and not Bluetooth.
The coverlet that came with the device looks good but does not match the theme of our nursery so we hope that in the future we can select the coverlet during purchase. Our biggest gripe though is the location of the physical buttons at the bottom of the device. However, this is something we can ignore in light of the many benefits that this device offers.
