Cannabidiol, also known as CBD, is one of the most popular health supplements in the world. While most people like to consume CBD using a tincture or by vaping infused e-juice, you can also find CBD-infused edibles.
The world “edible” is a catch-all term that refers to any food-based product that you can eat. This includes CBD-infused gummies, brownies, candy, and more. If you can eat it, there’s probably a company out there that makes a CBD-infused version. Read this best-of list to read a brief review of our favorite brands. We’ll also provide you with in-depth info about the potential benefits and drawbacks of CBD edibles so you can decide for yourself if this is the right supplement for you.
Recommended brands of CBD edibles
#1. Hemp Bombs
Check price | Discount code: Sleepline10
Hemp Bombs definitely has a great reputation in the CBD community when it comes to their vape juice for their wide variety of flavors and different strength options. While they may be most famous for their vape products, they also offer a really high quality line of edibles.
The reason we rank Hemp Bombs in the #1 spot is because they offer specially formulated “sleep gummies” that are infused with melatonin in addition to CBD. This is really cool to see because melatonin and CBD are two of the most common supplements that people use to help get a good night’s rest. Will these help you fall asleep faster than taking both supplements separately? No, but combining both of them into one product is a really convenient way to get both in your system. We definitely recommend this brand.
#2. Green Roads
Check price | Discount code: SLEEPLINE
Green Roads is another popular brand that offers a line of CBD gummies. This company offers a bunch of different flavors and shapes for their gummies. While the shape of the gummy doesn’t technically matter, it’s definitely a lot of fun to try out the different types. They offer standard gummy bears, froggies, fruit bites, and more.
Like Hemp Bombs, they also offer a line of gummies called “Sleepy Z’s” that are infused with melatonin to help you fall asleep faster. Unfortunately at the time of writing Green Roads only offers Sleepy Z’s in a 50mg formulation. This is great if you want to try melatonin-infused CBD gummies cheaply, but buying these small packs of gummies could get expensive over time. Hopefully they offer a stronger formulation soon.
#3. CBD FX
Check price | Discount code: SLEEPLINE
CBD FX, like the other companies on this list, earned their spot by offering a melatonin-infused CBD gummy. Each gummy contains 10mg of CBD and 5mg of melatonin, a perfect ratio that is specifically designed to help you fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer.
CBD FX ensures that their gummies are certified vegan by using pectin to formulate them instead of using the animal-derived gelatin. The color is derived from the skin of red potatoes and contains no artificial ingredients. If you’re vegan then this is definitely the gummy for you.
#4. Just CBD

Just CBD, unlike the other brands on this list, doesn’t offer melatonin-infused CBD gummies. What they do have is a wide selection of gummies that come in a variety of different strengths. They even offer a 3000mg “party jar” which should help even the worst insomniac get a good night of sleep.
If you’re a health-conscious CBD consumer, then you’ll definitely appreciate the fact that Just CBD offers a sugar-free formulation. Sugar-free gummies tend to be lacking in the flavor department, but these are just as good as the full-sugar version.
If you want a high concentration sugar-free product, this is the brand for you. If you’re looking for a melatonin-infused version you may want to look elsewhere.
What is CBD used for?
CBD products have quickly become popular and now you can get them in the form of oils, tinctures, capsules, and edibles. Those who have a sweet tooth and would like to try CBD are in for a treat because most CBD edibles come in the form of gummies and chocolates.
According to research, people mainly use CBD for the treatment of pain, anxiety, depression, and sleep disorders. About 50% of people who suffer from cancer, arthritis, or other pain-causing problems see an improvement in their sleep. Some people use CBD for their pets to help them deal with excruciating pain or seizures.
FDA has approved CBD use in treating epilepsy but has warned against producers who illegally market their products as a cure for numerous diseases. We still don’t know what CBD can and can’t do, but we are expecting more studies to come that will reveal true benefits and possible side effects of long-term use.
What are CBD edibles?
CBD edibles make up a group of products enriched with CBD which is derived from industrial hemp. They are safe to use but take one dose at a time – it’s not a good idea to have too much even if they are delicious. CBD edibles do not alter consciousness nor do they make you high. CBD only induces relaxation, pain relief, and faster sleep.
Some producers make CBD edibles with melatonin and other relaxing substances for better sleep.
Storing CBD edibles is easy, just make sure they are out of reach of pets and children. Put them in a dry and dark place.
What kinds of CBD edibles are there?
They mostly come as candies and sweets but can also be drunk. More and more bars offer CBD cocktails on their menu. These are some of the CBD products you can eat or drink.
- Gummies, gumdrops, chews
- Cake pops, cookies
- Candies, lollipops, candy mints
- Butter, honey
- Coffee, tea
- Beverage additives
- Bitters, wine
How much CBD should I take?
As the FDA hasn’t officially stated the dosage, people use CBD in the amounts they think or feel are right for them. While some use 10-20 mg, others will take between one and three milligrams as one dose.
Generally, people whose weight is low will require less CBD than heavier people. Sex and age also play a role as well as whether you are a beginner in CBD or not. Everyone should start with small doses and slowly increase the amount if desired.
According to a professor from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, Marcel Bonn-Miller – if the CBD is taken orally, about 20% or less of the drug will be absorbed by the body. This doesn’t mean you can eat 5 gummy bears if the package says to only take one. Be careful about CBD consumption and watch closely how it affects you and the way you feel.
You can’t be sure about what the package says. Professor Bonn-Miller also said that almost half of CBD products contain less CBD than labeled while almost a third contain more. This is why it’s important to choose the best product available.
The effectiveness of CBD; benefits and side effects
The effectiveness of CBD edibles is yet to be tested. As we mentioned above, the amount of CBD in products and absorption may vary from one product to another and from one person to another.
These are some of the problems people use CBD for:
- Chronic pain
- Appetite loss
CBD side effects
CBD doesn’t seem to have any life-threatening effects, but these are some side effects that may occur:
- interference with appetite (increased food cravings and intake),
- dry mouth feeling (increased thirst),
- lowering blood pressure (which might lead to lightheadedness),
- tiredness (as a result of relaxation and low blood pressure).
What if you take too much CBD?
If you take too much CBD, you may experience:
- liver damage (if taken over a long period of time)
- interference with appetite (increasing food cravings and intake),
- dry mouth feeling (increasing thirst),
- lowering blood pressure (which might lead to lightheadedness),
- tiredness (as a result of relaxation and low blood pressure),
- diarrhea (only when CBD is taken in excessive amounts).
Even a small amount may be too much for you if you’re using CBD for the first time, so be careful when starting and gradually increase the amount.
If you are taking any medications, consult your doctor before trying CBD in any form.
Where does CBD come from?
It is produced from industrial hemp, which is a type of cannabis with THC in trace amounts. CBD oil is extracted and thermally to become more compatible with humans and animals.
There’s CBD in the marijuana plant, but CBD oil from marijuana contains too much THC, which is why it’s not used widely and is illegal in states which prohibit marijuana products.
Can you get high from CBD?
CBD doesn’t get us “high”. CBD products that are federally legal are made from hemp which contains only trace amounts of THC. If they contained more THC, we surely would get high from them.
CBD only induces relaxation and pain-relief.
Using CBD to treat insomnia and medical conditions
CBD can cause pain relief in humans. This also means it can help treat insomnia because many patients who are under constant stress often can’t fall or stay asleep. About 50% of patients suffering from cancer, arthritis, or other painful conditions have had better sleep quality after taking CBD.
However, when it comes to medical use, CBD is an ingredient in only one drug that’s used against seizures.
Scientists are in a hurry to learn more about CBD due to its popularity – many animal studies have shown anti-inflammatory properties of CBD and one small study on people with multiple sclerosis has shown encouraging results in relieving pain when administered on the skin.
Be extra careful about sources that insist CBD can treat serious illnesses like cancer and heart disease. No scientific and medical research can back that up yet.
CBD can either reduce or increase the effects of many medications if taken in the same day. Always consult your doctor about using CBD with drugs.
Has the FDA approved CBD drugs?
The FDA has only approved Epidiolex, which is a drug for seizure treatment containing a purified form of CBD. None of the other CBD drugs and products have been approved.
The FDA has sent letters of warning to numerous companies that illegally market CBD products as cures for a variety of medical conditions.
Can I buy CBD products without prescription?
Yes, hemp-derived CBD products are available for purchase in stores and require no doctor’s prescription. Just make sure CBD is legal in your state.
Is it legal to buy CBD products?
Since the Farm Bill in 2018, CBD is legal to produce, sell, and buy in the entire US. However, individual states have the right to approve or ban CBD products, so check your local law.
The bill allows the consumption of industrial hemp and hemp-derived products. They mustn’t contain more than 0.3 THC.
Can I use CBD prior to a drug test?
The best is not to take that risk.
Generally, CBD products shouldn’t show up on a drug test because drug tests are made to identify THC only. However, you must be aware of the fact that CBD products still contain THC in trace amounts and there’s a small but realistic chance that the test will show this.
